Just for the record, you have no idea what "the plan" is. You're just a line pilot sailingfun. Reality check required.

I truly feel bad for you if you don't understand the financial waste that goes on at ALPA. Union dues spent on luxury hotels, unlimited food and alcohol bars, "escorts" and other trappings typical of old-school labor unions are not necessary to conduct the business of representing pilots. When this stuff happens, it does indeed rob us.

I'm sure you'll come up with a witty rebuttal to blow off this suggestion, but it would do you a lot of good to see the "lot of good" being done on a daily basis by your fellow pilots.
I've done a ton of ALPA work in my 35 year membership. I've seen the best within us, and I've seen exactly what PD speaks of with my own eyes. If you "get involved" long enough, you'll see both. When you decide you'd like to quit ALPA work, just question the over-spending that goes on.

OK, as long as you stop with the 'ALPA is without flaw' yadayadayada.

Here's where I'm at. I am personally offended that DALPA cultivates such a cozy relationship with the company at our expense, and for whatever reason, is unable or unwilling to strike an aggressive stance--even when the company steamrolls us. (SD memo after FAR 117, AF/KLM JV, etc.)

I also take it personally when DALPA and/or company operatives (who may or may not be on FPL while posting here) do everything they can to convince us we ought to be happy with "marginal" gains in this negotiating environment. Why would "our" "union" want to do that? It doesn't compute for me.

I firmly believe those guys are taking food out of my kids' mouths. I simply cannot fathom why we are paying huge money to an organization where line pilots are nowhere near a top priority, and where our money is badly wasted on epicurean delights for connected ALPA bureaucrats. Why does the BoD meeting need to be in a Florida Westin? Why is our money being spent on booze? Did you see that DALPA spent more than $280,000 on "neckties?" How are folks OK with that?

So I will continue to call out the expectation managers, apologists, and everyone else who tries to take money out of our pockets; politely when possible, and aggressively when necessary. I refuse to let the entrenched ALPA crowd set the agenda and frame the issues.

There's a lot here, so let me respond. First off, you are right; I've called you out. I've also called out Sailingfun a couple times, but should make sure I give equal time, as it were. I'm glad you're on ALPA's case. 280K on neckties, oil paintings for the prez, etc. are an absolute waste of OUR money and they should be called to task for that kind of garbage. I'm more of a middle of the road guy, admittedly. I think there are valid points you make about union errors, and valid points about things they do well, also. I don't mind calling guys to task when they endlessly spout kool aid silliness, but I don't like using words like management hacks, or ALPA apologists and the like because I don't think it helps. Those guys will just become more entrenched and so will the other side. It seems to me we need to put that stuff aside and work together to come to management with a united front that shows we won't take concessions, and want across the board gains in pay, QOL issues, retirement, medical (including sick call monitoring), and scope. Please continue with your opinions; you often open my eyes to things I may not have considered. Also, if I am too one sided when I call guys out, please kick my butt back in line as you did tonight. Safe flying, PD!
