My question is, how do we sort them out. Sorta like the mamma-san with the grenade.
Virtually everything you list as a "fact" in this post is just patently false. If anyone wants to actually learn the history of this faith you might start with "Islam: A Short History" by Karen Armstrong.
Islam was started when the society they lived in suffered from a great disparity in wealth with a few very very rich people and many poor people. (sound familiar to anyone) Islam was set up on the premise that if you truly believed in God you should care for the least in society as well as those on top. It was essentially a rudimentary Social Security system where you gave through your place of worship and they looked after those in need. The Koran specifically counts Jews and Christians as part of the family of Abraham and they lived side by side in peace for centuries.
Here is a quote from the opening chapter of the Koran:
"Verily those who believe (in Islam), and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians: for those who believe in God and the Last Day and do good deeds shall be a reward with their Lord, and there shall be no fear on them nor shall they grieve."
Sounds pretty militaristic and extreme, yes? I think if anyone looks at the history of the good Christians in Europe in the second millennium will find that history littered with religious war after religious war which essentially terminated in World War II. Please remember that our country was founded by Christian people that were fleeing (or being expelled) from their countries by other Christian people. We burned people at the stake over religion in this country.
There are 1.5 billion Muslims in the world. They invented our modern mathematics, astronomy and many other scientific pursuits. They only reason we have any idea of the history of the Greeks is because the Muslims translated their texts into modern languages while the Christians were burning the history books of the Greeks.
ISIS are not Muslims any more than Jim Jones or Timothy McVeigh were Christians. The Christian Crusaders massacred virtually every inhabitant of Jerusalem in a slaughter so bloody that bodies rotted in the streets for years as they didn't have enough people left to bury the dead.
The biggest mistake you can make is to ignore true history and invent a new history to match your personal biases. Look at the history of countering these kinds of threats from the Roman empire, to Vietnam, and then to Iraq and Afghanistan. In every case, might doesn't make right, might makes enemies. In a rare moment of truth Donald Rumsfeld talked about creating two terrorists for every one you kill. That was certainly true for the British when they attempted to squash the terrorists in the Thirteen Colonies led by that traitor George Washington (remember George Washington got his military training in the British Army and to them he was a traitor). The more brutal the British acted, the more they lost the war.
ISIS will implode because they are just psychotic killers who can maintain some control through terror for some brief period of time. The worst thing we could do is go charging in there willy nilly with no sense that we are strangers in a different land with different customs.
Islam is a peaceful religion. Psychotic people are psychotic people no matter what their religion. ISIS are not Islamic they are just psychotics attempting to maintain control over their crazies with some "religion" that they invented themselves.
No, I am not Muslim and I don't discuss my religion but I am not Muslim. If you want to really find solutions you should study actual history and not just invent it.

You're partially correct Alfa. But you're omitting some key facts.
I've studied Islam and its connection to terrorism, and the resultant impact on America and aviation. I've written hundreds of pages about it. It is, most definitely, not a religion of peace. To believe so, is to ignore history.
Here's where you're off vector: Islam was founded on blood and the taking of lives. The Koran is their Bible but you don't quote the Hadith. The Hadith are essentially prologues to the Koran that have been accepted over time. The Hadith are very war oriented and command believers to demand from non-believers three possible outcomes. 1) convert to Islam, 2) pay a jizah (tax above the normal tax), or 3) be killed.
ISIS is just the latest mutation of a cancer. Muslim extremists have been attacking western civilizations for centuries. Islamic terrorists have been bombing airplanes for decades. See the appendices in my book "War Crimes." Its breathtaking what most Americans don't know about this insidious, generational war.
2001 was their most significant accomplishment but radical Islam has been targeting commercial aviation since the early 1970s. Long before the cancer of ISIS evolved.
Your ignorance of the history and facts complicates the problem. If you want to debate the history of Islam and its war on humanity, I'm here.
I've read the Koran and Hadith as well.
I will Carl because it does impact our profession and our industry.

Unpleasantly surprised.

Forum Rule Reminder
Guys,
In case you have forgotten - from the sign up page:
Topics Not for Discussion
There are currently NO forums that provide a venue for discussing politics or religion. While DreamLaunch Media Ltd. and Airline Pilot Central embrace the diversity the world has to offer, these subjects often are very emotional and there are many different views. In our experience the wide range of views and emotions rarely contribute to a harmonious online community or beneficial contributions to the piloting profession.
Carl and Buzz I appreciate your attempted restraint and I don't think it would be fair for me to start deleting posts midway through a discussion but any more follow on posts regarding religion/politics will be deleted.
