Rant of the day, why do we put A320's out of SLC to the east coast when they end up load restricted if it's even warm in SLC!

I had heard some of this many years ago when NW first got the A320's. One of my best friends from high school was a NW mechanic on the 320, he told me it had 'issues' with long distance/fuel/takeoff performance when in the mountains.

This is the first I've heard about A320 wt. issues at Delta though.
Are they based in SLC now? And is the A321 going to be worse? Or better? (bigger engines?).

Remember when they bought the MD90's, specifically for the SLC trips?

Talked with the dispatcher. He said we have two different motors on the A320's. The older motors have a 15000 lb difference in climb limit weight out of SLC on a 87 degree day. Still sucks as a non rev when you find a flight with 30 empty seats and they end up blocked.

25 out of 69 A320s have the smaller motors rated at 25,000 lbs. The rest have the 26,500 lb thrust motors.

Both engines have the same flat rated climb power. The weight restrictions are not very common.

I've only seen restrictions going out to BDA when we have to use ORF as an alternate.

That's pretty wild....going east as well. I knew they were limited going coast to coast, especially west.

I figured as much, but I was hoping with all the new people it would be better.

Why was reserve coverage so good for the last week or two of September but it's so bad for most of October? Does it always go that way, i.e., bad at first but better as the month progresses?

Well, the answer is "it depends." No, it doesn't always go that way. Regular line holders sharpshoot the trips in open time, guys drop stuff and pick up other stuff, it's very fluid. Always keep your requests in. Things change daily.
