I agree that was a bit of an extreme scenario.

You are completely mischaracterizing 88Driver's statements. His point, if I understand it correctly, is that when you have rules in place (like CDOs) that are inherently unsafe, it places pilots in a very bad place.
And he was also a bit overdramatic when he characterizing some, most, or all pilots as those who would not do what it takes to be ready to fly when they're assigned to do so. Rules like CDO's, if properly limited, are not inherently unsafe, unless you assume that pilots' actions beforehand will inevitably make them so. If that is the case, we need to go after commuters because some number of them will not report for duty properly rested. And we need to eliminate early reports in base because some local pilots won't go to bed early like they should.

Where does it end?

Jupiter, actually.

Anyone who's read any of my posts should know by now how eager I am to learn everything there is to know about any changes to our work rules. And to the extent that there is a decision to be made by me and my fellow pilots, or by my reps, I want those decisions to be based on factual information and nothing else, including spin.

I assume we're both on the same page there?

Absolutely. Cheers.

We need to verify what happens during a delay on a COD overnight. Summer storms, short legs resulting in flow delays in and out of hubs and other common sources of IROP effecting these type of operations have to be considered.

Also, these are the last flights in, first flights out, which typically have the highest percentages of weather related issues and diverts.

Fortunately we do have a number of Reps who have experience with these at other airlines. Their experiences help craft a better product.
If it's anything like I experienced last summer in the midst of two months of tsra activity is that if you get there too late (for instance ORF at 130am) and the FAs are doing the 6am out, they just slept in the airplane. Don't blame them really, what's the point? Save yourself 50 min of round trip driving, 10 min of checking in, TSA and that's if the hotel and van have their act together.

I would sleep in the airplane too.

So CDOs are bad because the Pilots who bid them are all staying up all day to get extra time at home and are showing up not properly rested????

First off we don't fly them yet so any posting about who will fly them and for what reason is highly speculative.

Secondly, that is also a pretty broad brush and pretty cynical. I don't want CDOs because I think they are a step backwards, but I am not willing to claim a whole bunch of my fellow Pilots will show up not rested. Sadly I think a few Pilots may push it, but don't you think those same guys are probably pushing it now?

As I have said 90% or more of the LAX redeyes are on the first leg of our trips. I normally avoid them but when I do fly them I try my best to show up well rested and believe my fellow pilots would do the same.

For the record - I am still against CDOs.

Scoop
The whole "red-eyes" suck is the idea that people don't show up rested for work. I would maintain for some people 6 or 7 AM reports may be lest rested than 10 PM reports. Personally (while I know I am an anomaly) I would take a lot of those 3 day 30 hour layover trips because they fit with my home life and I was able to get good sleep before, during and after the trip. If, for some reason they still exist (the CDOs, etc. may eliminate those) they will be very popular as they will move to a 3 day 15:45 with a ton of credit. I believe we need to see that actual language (with explanations of the language versus 117) before we judge. While it is hard to judge this as a "win" or "loss" I am willing to see the whole thing, talk to my reps about it and then figure out whether I am for or against it. Anybody that thinks in this environment we are going to get big "wins" against the company is forgetting we are in a very poor position with regards to overall political environment for RLA. While the Democrats are in general union supporters I really don't think it extends to the white collar professional union like ours (just the blue collar ones like Teachers, Teamsters, UAW, etc). Maybe I'm just a pessimist having lived through the 9/11 furlough, the bankruptcy, pension loss, huge pay losses, no progression (as a 2000 hire I am still over a 1000 numbers from the most junior CA position and still don't believe I will have a shot at CA with enough seniority to make it worthwhile (my target would be 73n/320 mid level seniority out on the West Coast)).

I was discussing with a friend that if we do approve the CDO's, I wouldn't be surprised to see any MX issues pushed off onto the last departures, ie; the CDO's, via aircraft swaps in order to maintain schedule integrity throughout the day. In other words, you show up for your CDO, and MX has a red tag on the plane and gives you a ready time 3 hours later...

The six hour scheduled behind the door could be a rarity in that case. We really need to see the language and decide if there are enough protections to keep the operation realistic and safe.

3 > 4? Do you get easily duped? Have you helped out a Nigerian prince by responding to his email and mailing a blank check?

Last flight out ATL-LAX, 2 pilots, 2 hotels once they get there. etc. Red Eye back, 2 pilots, 2 hotels from previous night.

Instead, augmented crew doing the same, 3 pilots, no hotels. Am I missing something?

13 hour flight time limit, 13 hour duty day.

It's there for a reason. But I think you already know that.
That ^^^

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether theses CDO's will create a need for more pilots, less pilots, or will it be net neutral?

ADG will add some credit time to those, as will turning the layover into a CDO (if the max 4 hours block and min 7:30 pay are both true).

Either way, the Company will pay extra for such a situation and will work their hardest to avoid either solution. Most likely, we'll see longer and less commutable trips as a result of these changes, as opposed to a plethora of CDOs.

And no more 2230 reports in LAX!!
Actually, the worst trips to me are the 3 day trips that start with a Redeye and on day 3 you are up at 7 or 8 AM Eastern time after landing at 7 or 8 AM the day prior. So, either you are the type that was rested for the Redeye and absolutely can't sleep on day two because you didn't wake up until 2 PM after your day 1 redeye. Both of those 3 day trips (if they didn't fall into the 2200 carve out) paid 13:30 and will now pay 15:45 (if the company doesn't find a pay to build more credit in).
