Incident: Delta MD88 at New York on Apr 2nd 2014, hydraulic failure and runway excursion
By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, Apr 3rd 2014 11:26Z, last updated Thursday, Apr 3rd 2014 11:30Z
A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N992DL performing flight DL-886 from Atlanta,GA to New York La Guardia,NY (USA) with 118 passengers and 5 crew, was descending towards New York when the crew reported a hydraulic failure and decided to divert to New York's JFK Airport requesting runway 31L (length 14,572 feet/4,442 meters). The crew indicated they had lost all hydraulics fluid, had no brakes whatsoever, the gear doors would be open due to manual gear extension and they had no nose gear steering. JFK Tower advised emergency services that runway 31L (runways 22 active) was reserved for the emergency and would be closed as soon as the aircraft landed, they were cleared to proceed to assist the aircraft as needed after landing. The aircraft touched down and slowed on the runway, the crew requested chocks repeatedly stating they had no brakes, both engines were shut down, fire brigades told the crew they would apply chocks as soon as the aircraft came to a stop. The aircraft went off the runway at low speed and came to a stop with all gear on soft ground.
The passengers disembarked normally via the rear stair of the aircraft and were bussed to the terminal.
The airline confirmed a hydraulic problem prompted the crew to divert to JFK Airport due to the longer runways available. While taxiing to the gate the aircraft exited a taxiway.

what about the acccumlators?
I thought that PBS would award those days automatically.
It does not. I ended up on RES up to the day I started class, no 48 hours off. Turns out I was told you still have to bid those days off and if you don't get them off then that provision kicks in I guess manually? I didn't follow up, didn't care.

A pilot will be afforded the option of designating two days free of duty immediately
prior to the commencement of his qualification training or the travel to such training, provided he requests such days no later than 1800E on the 4th day of the month priorto the bid period that contains the earliest of such designated days. Such designateddays will not be paid and credited as training days or have a value for lineconstruction purposes. For a reserve pilot, such designated days will constitute twoof the X-days allotted to his line under Section 12 N. 2.
Given that it requires a pilot to designate these days prior to the opening of PBS bidding for the month in question, I don't see how you can also them be made to bid for those days off in PBS, either on a regular or a reserve line.
Why thank you, but must you have used such a God-awful picture of me? I so much prefer the one of Denny and me as flamingoes.

Frankly, it is what it is... but don't expect me to be enthused about the potential of being displaced to a 737 to finish out my 35yr career at the big D.

Question about move up vacations:
I miss bid and have 2 weeks in the well respected FEB bid month. I wanted to split off the back end and put the third week somewhere else during the year. I put in a bid (correctly I thought) which basically covered every other week during the year at some point.
I think they ran the move ups for MAY and did not get anything. Does crew resources only AWARD move up vacations for the current month only(MAY) or do they run it for the entire year every month (meaning, if it's run in May, if a week is all of the sudden avail in OCT, I would be awarded OCT during May's move up award)
Thanks

What do you call it when you have three APC'ers on the same flight? Is it a flock of APC'ers, or a pride?
