I don't dispute your point here. My input to this particular argument has only one focus: That being whom I would rather see go out of business... DAL or BA. I would much rather see BA go out of business. The secondary issue is whether I believe BA is any danger of that. Absolutely not, because they do lots more than build commercial airplanes. It is up to them to produce a better product than airbus, and I believe that in many ways they do, but they also have to be price competitive. The market will determine that IF, the market is allowed to function. When Boeing gets subsidies from both another country's government AND OURS, it's not a fair market, and it is not Boeing that is ultimately being harmed. Frankly, I am surprised they can get away with it fro a legal perspective. (disclaimer: not a lawyer and not in H.I. Express) So to your last point, if the US Government were to ever get over itself, and support US businesses, those low interest loans would be available to American companies as well as government supported sand fleas. And I say all of this from the perspective of a guy that would rather sell crack than fly an airbus.
I really don't think Boeing is ever going out of business in regards to it's BCA division. The logbook is way too big and the problem is the initial costs when there's a new product rollout like the 787. The 777X will be much less burdensome on the company.
So, as soon as fixed costs for the 787 development ease themselves out of the mix and net profit margins increase, it's business as usual.
The trick is how much cash flow does the company have until they're out of the jam until that happens? I am guessing they'll be A-OK.

I'd take narrow body F/O at Delta over foreign carrier 777 CA. I work for a great company and I'm a member of a great union. I'll admit I've got some concerns for Delta and Alpa in regards to an uneven playing field internationally; but I'm not going to be fired unless I do something criminal and my view is that liberty trumps money.

Their Capt pay isn't that far above Delta FO pay. I have 2 good friends who went to EK who are both Captains there now. We make about the same but they have the tax advantage which was easily offset by the fact that they are both now divorced with kids. Both went over happily married and that ended quickly.

We procured 100 737-900s because Boeing boned the 787 program and owed us LOTS of money. What other Boeings have we bought? We ordered a bunch of 321s and a few 330s. So the impending RFP will be telling. My bracket isn't busted on these conclusions and predictions, and in my final four, I have a few 737-900s, but NOTHING bigger from Washington State.
Oh, and how bout my VOLS?

In the end the airbus order was all price. Airbus needed to fill production slots as those programs wind down and we got great deals.
Orders for either the 787 or 350 will not come nearly as cheap on the RFP due out shortly.
KNOXVILLE, TENN. (KFGO-AM) -- People associated with the Fargo Airsho are shaken by word that a popular pilot who performed at the show a number of times has died in a crash in a remote area of Tennessee.
Airshow committee co-chair Dick Walstad says Jim Maroney was killed when his "Super Chipmunk" went down Sunday night south of Knoxville. Walstad says Maroney was headed from his home in Wisconsin to an air show in Florida.
Walstad calls Maroney an outstanding, safety-minded pilot. Maroney, a Casselton native, was a former squadron and group commander for the 1-19th wing of the Air National Guard in Fargo.
He retired from the military in 2002. He was most recently was a chief pilot for Delta Airlines.

I'd take right seat NB at Delta over all of the above. Living where you want to live is worth WAAYYYY more, at least to me, than being able to say "I'm a 777 CA." When you think about it, it's the same reason many of us won't chase flying to NYC, even though we could all hold something better there.
