Any "Latest & Greatest" about Delta?
That sounds like a wonderful idea from the brain trust in flight ops. "No AP/no FD on the mad dog! Let's put a in a five minute segment at recurrent to get them back up to speed. Then they're good to go!"
It's ludicrous for the company to think we're going to put our tickets on the line doing raw-data hand flying after years of beating us senseless for doing so.

which may be used to help discourage the vnav with AP is the one and only way that a few are beholden to. and when I say a few, I mean a few LCA (definitely not all) and LCA wannabe types. I wouldn't like a guy practicing hand flying with no FD either and i m sorry I didn't clarify.
evidently the 88 group has been doing things that the 9 group doesn't seem to do even though the 9 group has no auto throttles or altitude capture. I think that's raised eyebrows. but to be honest I don't know, I'm a nobody line pilot.
Could this new hand flying "practice" in the sim be a result of Air France Flight 447?
"In the agency's final report, which was released today, investigators determined that a combination of technical failures and mistakes made by inadequately trained pilots was responsible for the crash. They recommended that pilots be better trained to manually fly commercial aircraft at high altitudes..."
It seems the First Officer had become so reliant on automation (and was probably trained in one of those european ab initio training cram jobs) he could not recognize what was happening when the airplane entered a stall...calling for the Captain to come help (the Captain was temporarily out of the cockpit). Watch the video with cvr text below and the video that follows.

[QUOTE=Timbo;1433242]I must be some kind of mutant, raised by aliens.
I have never wanted to work for a living, that's why I took flying lessons. When I was a kid, I had to dig ditches, mow lawns, shovel driveways, and frame houses to pay for my flying lessons, so I could then, maybe, someday...Not Work all summer!
My dad was a general aviation CFI, and freight pilot. All his friends were airline pilots...usually on furlough. They never bragged about how much money they made, they bragged about taking the summer off to enjoy their boats! (grew up in NH, "summer" is about 8 weeks, from end of June to beginning of Aug. which is why I live in FL now )
End of June until the beginning of August - 8 Weeks??? I guess high school math teacher was out of the question even though they get the summers off too.
Only kidding Timbo. These very important issues (most issues) are best discussed on the water with a cold one. If I ever get a good MCO layover the first round is on me!

You stated that your perception was that you would be heavily debriefed. That is an invalid perception. I.E. flawed.
We just got a memo on it for the 744 fleet. I do it all the time anyway to keep up my hand flying skills and scan, but the vast majority does not. I think it's a good thing, but in baby steps for those pilots who weren't already doing it.

We have pilots here who were hired 13 to 14 years ago who aren't exactly senior on the MD88, 73N or 320 in Atlanta.
While Delta not no credit for it's fleet in the most recent merger, we can bet the Alaska guys will want to merge right at the 73N. In Atlanta that's Captains who can't quite hold the lines they want on the 777. It's more senior than those who buy the Best of Carson on VHS.

I'm at 12 years and junior in LA. I have no doubt that an Alaska merger will destroy my QOL. My point is that their new hires will not negatively affect our most recent hires in the SIL. NB guys in bases shared by AK will suffer. I think there'll be WB and base fences. ATL should be ok. LAX and SEA will take it in the shorts.

When are you moving to ATL, buzz? Wait.. I'm in ATL, and you're senior to me... how about DTW! They have nice summers in MSP, dontchaknow?
