Yep,
Hiring next year. Just like you might see the sign in a bar that says "Free beer tomorrow."
Actually I really think that we might hire......... unless we are affected by:
SARS
War
Some kind of Economic crisis
An aviation related terrorist event
Bird Flu pandemic
A hurricane appears anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico
It snows twice in Atlanta next winter
The price up fuel jumps.............again
Age 70 hits - ALPA decides that we can not stop it so we might as well have some input. Great!
PRP II - "Back in Black" After all how are we gonna train the new 747/777 Pilots when all the LCA are retiring.
Codeshares/JVs/DCI Blossom at our expense (OOOPs too late - already happened).
A Zombie apocalypse occurs.
The "Board" does not allow it - After all how will it look on the street if we are hiring while singing the praises of Capacity restraint?
The company wants to hire but sees that most Pilots are willingly White Slipping up to 95 hours, so they decide not to hire.
Carbon Credits become mandatory and cost too much.
Stagflation hits with a vengeance.
Alaska airlines opens a NYC base to provide more convenient connection options to Delta passengers.
Or we spend billions on stock buybacks (again) and then anyone of the above scenarios occur.
So if none of the above occur, we will definitely hire "next year."

Until I see it on the ramp, it ain't real. But I will take my summer and fall off, thank you.
Watch, OE training: "congrats FTB you are off August, September, October, November, December right up until December 24th. We have a two day for you for your IOE."
FTB "Wait, what? Christmas? Man I'm getting screwed!!!"

Ugh, I feel like Scoop just kicked me in the junk. Probably dead on accurate, though. United is definitely scooping up some folks that I'd think DAL would love to have. 4000 hour mil guys retiring, combat vets, etc. I suppose that many highly qualified regional guys too. We are passing them all by in the name of saving a buck.

Lets hope the contract mx in Miami doesn't screw it up like they did to a 90. Ya know....the one that chopped the nose off just behind the cockpit. Oops! Hey, can I borrow that jack under the tail? I need it to hang my hat.

"....airlines would like to reduce pilot costs. For example, instead of sending four pilots on a long-haul flight, they could send just two; one flying and one ‘in reserve’.
The traditional answer to pilot error has been to have two pilots monitoring one another according to agreed standard operating procedures and crew resource management techniques. The ACROSS project is looking to replace the second pilot (at least temporarily) with automated systems. In particular, it will investigate advanced avionics to allow pilots to cope with peak workloads and deal with crew incapacitation.
It’s a common joke among pilots that 99% of the time they’re massively overpaid. The job is easy and routine, especially with today’s highly automated cockpits. But 1% of the time, you can’t pay them enough because of an emergency, bad weather or other critical situation. This is where it really helps to have two pilots and so these are the areas where Across needs to deliver.
In the first instance, the project is looking at allowing single pilot operation to give crew members a chance to rest or to help a single remaining pilot land the plane in case her co-pilot is incapacitated. Beyond that, the roadmap is clearly towards single-pilot operations."

Not to worry, when hiring does begin in Fall 2012 it will last two months and end at the beginning of 2013 because.......wait for it......

Boeing trying to replace the relief pilot or relief crew... yikes. You could get rid of nearly 1,200 pilots overnight if you removed 1/2 the 744/777 crews and made the 765 and 7ER Bs match the size of the As.
