The DAL Openboard. Publishes the age of all people that drop off the seniority list. I lopped off everyone that was under 55 and arrived at 62 and 7 months.
If the company can buy people out at 62.5 and make it make financial sense, then they'll continue to do so. They wouldn't be doing it if they didn't think it'd make sense.
I'm pretty sure someone in Crew Resources is smart enough to make a histogram.

And you think after the company spends millions of dollars for the 88 fleet cockpit refresh that they'll park them? This management team is smart. They expect a ROI with everything. The M88s are scheduled to be around a long time. They have the most life left in them out of any fleet at Delta. And who will fly more RJs? They can't hire people to staff them now.

I know exactly what your career has turned into daldude, and I'm one of those fairly senior guys. I pounded this keyboard like a maniac trying to warn guys in your seniority not to bite at this TA. As Bucking Bar so eloquently stated: our ability to perform flying for the Delta brand is our ONLY treasure. And we squandered it in this TA by agreeing to the changes in scope, and the ridiculous claim that we've done something about our JV's and code shares. Couple this with agreeing to further productivity increases, and the stagnation has turned into heavy displacements to lower paying aircraft.
None of our careers will get better until we fight for what is important. And that is our flying of our brand.

I agree. The bean counters are calling the shots.
Otherwise, we'd have a tablet EFB with wifi, and access to the same up-to-date turbulence and weather radar picture as the guy in seat 2C.
But there's no dollar figure the bean counters can use to justify the expenditure to provide us that type of SA.

I dont know if 62.5 years is the average age that guys are leaving at or not, but so what? The average was never 60 in the past. The important thing to remember is that the average age just went up about 5 years. So if it is 62.5 then it probably was about 57.5 previously.
Some guys got an instant 5 year windfall. Guys who are FOs get stuck for 5 more years in the right seat, but others were screwed over even worse - like the guys who hit 60 before the change.
And retirements don't help the bottom guys with a shrinking airline.

We here very different things. I heard hiring in 2013 not 2012. Never heard a word about a wide body order until 6 weeks ago. The company is doing exactly what they said with the fleet plan. Every aircraft thay said they were bringing on is coming and it now looks like they are bumping the promised numbers up substantially.
We did not get the expected 300 ER's however the 196 we did get are more valuable to the pilot group over time then the 300 expected because of the demographics. You would not be very smart if you wanted to trade what was expected for what actually occurred in the ER program.

Flight Operations recently announced that they are prepared to begin the pilot hiring process as early as the fourth quarter of this year (2012). This is consistent with the analysis contained in this Touch & Gos.*

Perhaps there were some discussions behind the scenes, but the only statements put out in crew planning memos in regard to the plan for this AE was to close the DC-9 categories.
