That in a nutshell is why I don't have much sympathy for some of these cities. They want world class service.. they need to support the world class airlines. Give us some of the sweetheart deals that you offer SWA for gate spaces and such. You don't want to do that... we are entitled to go where we can make a profit, and playing on an uneven surface will cause us to leave. Like you said... You want low fares... fill in the blanks. Just don't cry when you have to go to ATL or ORD to go to Europe/SA/Asia instead of going to the local airport.
And the interesting thing is that about 6 months ago the mayor of Memphis went to ATL to see what could be done to ensure a continued presence of Delta's service. Well... duuuuh. It's just one more example of how the public feels we are a public service that is not allowed to make a profit.

And when really pressed, make cuts to budgets. i.e. Instead of raising budget by inflation+8% next year, agree to raise budget by inflation+8%-.05%.

Yup. CVG *****ed for years about fares. Now, they have little to no service and three terminals are less than one. If there was a viable market there, there would be service. Not even SWA is going in. Comair is gone. DHL is a ghost. Pick your poison. Have fun connecting through Dayton.
I know many people have no problem driving to Dayton if you're in Cincy, or down to Lexington or Louisville if you're in Northern KY. People save a lot of money doing that.
Also, minor point, DHL moved back to CVG and has built a very large sort facility there. That's the only thing keeping CVG viable at this point. If DHL wasn't paying a majority of the airport fees, DAL wouldn't be able to do it alone.
The entire situation is sad, very sad. Cincinnati has already lost industry because of the lack of options at CVG. In the end, it is the people who get screwed by all of this.
Mesabah and Johnso,
Ok, I can see that but then it comes down to logistics like: who is under contract for the gate space in B and E concourses, Delta or Skywest? If it's Skywest (and I would bet it is) where are GoJet/Pinnacle going to get gate space to operate on the scale we need? You guys are probably right but I don't think it's going to be easy. Skywest isn't going to go away easily.
Eventually, with the MRJ thing, something is going to have to be done and maybe this is Delta thinking ahead to that point...........
