Captain had a nice chat with the Crew Tracking after that. When we screw up it's an invitation to the Chief Pilot's office...what about when schedulers mess up?
or more likely an ASAP

Default Santiago

Quick couple of questions. Thinking of non-rev'ing to Santiago with the family.

1. Are there family oriented things to do there?
2. Is the crew hotel nice and centrally located (and fairly priced)?

I can't find the rotation to there and don't know the hotel name.

Thanks,

Humboldt

You probably already know this, but if not, do keep in mind that you have to pay the Chilean visa fee of $130 per person if non-revving in.

Not sure how many you'd be flying in with but a family of four would be $520. At least the departure tax isn't too bad compared to Europe.

Contails,

No I did not know that. Guess we will head up the hill to Tahoe for snow instead.

Thanks,

For the love of haysoos, take the family to Chile. $520 for an experience of a lifetime? Don't be cheap.

What was your 24 hour rest period scheduled for? Like 1300-1300? 1800-1800? You only get 24 hours away from the airport. There's still a mandatory 9 hour prior to the end of rest schedule check. Total, utter, BS I know. Don't shoot the messenger, but if your rest ended at 2100, and they had the trip on your schedule before 1200, you're on the hook for it.

Thanks Jerry, I figured my 24 hrs was rest. Not being on a pseudo call. I was released at 11 they called me around 9 pm to notify me for a 1 pm two day. Well good information to have.

Well that's good. They really shouldn't call, but the interpretation is that one call isn't an interruption, and they'll always hang their hat on the fact that you can always ignore them. Sounds like they were probably trying to do you a favor and give you a heads up. No sense in making you check your schedule at 0200.

Definitely a lesser known nuance of RES. I've had two different schedulers, and ALPA explain it to me, and your 24hrs of rest is basically just an X day to them. All the same rules apply - even though I think we'd all agree it should be 24 hours of not being disturbed at all - even though then they wouldn't let us bid for illegal groups of RES days (7+ days domestic categories).

Enjoy your trip.

Oh I agree, for sure. I just wanted to share that information to him/her because for a family of five or six, between visa fees and departure taxes, it would tack on about $1,000 to the trip which isn't cheap and perhaps would change the minimum amount of time spent there to consider it worth paying. Still if non-revving in business class, it would obviously be way cheaper than anyone else on the plane and highly worth it!

Humboldt, the fee also lasts the life of the passport that it is in. So if you've got a bunch of passports with 5-10 years remaining, there's plenty of time for another trip or two after the first one. It would be paid for already. A second trip to non-rev to one of the most challenging locations a non-rev can do: Easter Island!
