I can tell you that it is DAL's policy not to upgrade tourist fares, but after getting slapped with a 375K fine for involuntary denied boardings they are doing just that.
I talked to a gate agent about it, and her response was if we have a paying passenger that does not have a seat in the back because we oversold it, we will upgrade the highest mileage passenger to First and keep doing this until the jet is full. They do not just take the pond scum from what I was told, there is a little reason and thought behind it, but yes we are giving people a
8K seat for their coach fare and not charging them for it.
Now in Europe they may not do this. It is just here in ATL and in NYC that I have seen this happening and quite frequently.

Gotta love the MD-88.
I mean, I actually do love this thing because its so good yet so bad. But the other day after I used the periscope to figure out if the landing gear was really down or not I came to the realization that the person who engineered this perfect iphone youtube moment has been dead for a long time.
So its kind of sad but fortunate for them that they will not be drug out into the street and shot along with whoever thought the DC-9 overspeed monkey wee wee indicator was a serious and proper warning method, whoever thought the Brasilia prop and flap design was smart and whatever simliar military comparisons that can be thought up. I'm sure there is a goldmine there.

Not sure that I follow you. USERRA is federal law and therefore not subject to a collective bargaining agreement. Are you saying the union can bargain for, and get the company to agree not to verify MIL LV?
I guess its possible, but why would DALPA even want that? Would the large portion of non-military guys want to make it easier for military guys to manipulate their schedules to the detriment of all non-military pilots? Like I said I am having a hard time following your logic.

Scoop
Scoop, you are corrrect on USERRA. Neither the company, union or contract between the two has anything to do with military leave. Delta found that out in 1987 when they attempted to force a Western Pilot on active duty back to work. It ended up with the CEO of Delta have to write a personal letter of apology to the pilot in question. Knowing how much RA liked pilots I doubt it was a easy letter for him to write.

Speaking of which - anyone read the ALPA Watch on the merger? I was kinda hoping they were going to discuss Compass.
What is ALPA watch anyway?

Take a day off one day and go talk to some of the people at DALPA. Get a real idea of the company stance on this. Find out what has been done behind the scenes. You will not be able to post it here but I think you might come back with a different perspective. If we want the flying above 85,000 lbs it will only happen in contract negotiations and then only after a strike is underway. I will go there if we are fighting for all the EMB170/175 flying. Nothing short of a strike however is going to bring that flying back.

Sailing:
It depends on who you talk to.
Some tell me nearly the exact same you posted. If you ask in former NWA bases you are told that the Company came to ALPA with a request to put Compass on the list to make the flow actually function in a more orderly fashion. I am told ALPA responded to the Company proposal with a demand for pay negotiations. Then the Company decided not to activate the flow down anyway, removing the "reason" to integrate Compass, case closed.
I did notice Compass got a new pilot coordinator.
Since officially the represented members of this organization are told nothing about the representations being made on the members' behalf, we know nothing about what happens behind closed doors until after the fact.
I'm not pleased that negotiations are routinely entered into without polling, or communications.
Much of the pilots' anger (justified or not) about Moak's grievance settlement was that in effect, it was scope negotiations.
I've spent hours with our Reps and Chairman on this topic. They have my letters too. At this point it seems we have politely and professionally agreed to disagree on scope restoration.
We have elections this fall. I think some good guys have an excellent chance of winning. Based on their prior work in C44 to get some good resolutions passed, I'm hopeful they'll provide a little pressure on the rudder to turn this great ship ALPA around on outsourcing our work.
