Its great that we have a system that allows pilots who would like to work those holidays to volunteer. That means that you can be home with your family rather then get a jetway assignment. I would not feel bad for them. I would be happy that by flying they insure you can stay home if you have the basic seniority to hold it.

Be very careful using that card. It (claiming stress inducing the inability to use your medical certificate, hence sick leave) can open a path that you don't want to go down. Just like you shouldn't fly fatigued...it's not sick and while you may be paid for the trip, you can't use sick leave to cover its expense.

I think it may be harsh to unequivocally say that in this instance calling in sick would be illegal and lacking in character; stress or sleep deprivation could certainly make one unfit for flight duty...having said that, you are correct that FMLA and vacation moves are viable options. My wife had a serious health issue last year and it took me about 10 mins on the phone to move a vacation so I could stay home and take care of her and the family.
