Cute, but without a SNB aircraft no additional dual class large RJ's, and we have still locked the ability to get above current Cap with the previous 3:1 ratio mainline threshold. If 717 were not to come another SNB aircraft could fulfill that role, as in the previously studied 319's. We are protected either way.

Scoop, the thing is one day doesn't give a good indication especially since RAW scores count sick calls, MLOA, training (but not both days), etc.

I broke it out by where these pilots are in the reserve seniority list (top 25%, 2nd 25%, etc) and how many flight hours they have, which btw is still not a great indication of work load. For instance, I did a 4 day this month worth 15 block hours and it's nothing to have 2/3rds of your trip being deadheads.

But:

Question for the APC brain trust...

On reserve... I understand that, once you have exceeded the "max reserve" for the month, they can't use you for any more flying. But can you still yellow slip (i.e. submit a preference for being first for flying), as long as it doesn't take you over the max projection (15 over ALV)?

My thought on the old vs new reserve system is this; the old SHORT CALL system was broken and needed to be fixed, not the long call system. What we did was get rid of snakes in the house by letting bears in.

If senior pilots had anything to complain about it was an unpredictable, asinine and 0 raw score SC system. I could see where senior pilots were irritated with it, I know I was.

The fix was to revive the old seniority only system for LC and the result was the QOL for a majority of reserve pilots was destroyed while the top group retained the same LC QOL they had before. Seniority already was taken into account under the old system, senior pilots typically didn't fly to week 3 or 4. The difference now is for the top 25-50% who are perpetually at the top of reserve due to the high RAW threshold buckets and the bottom 50% are slaughtered with the changes plus weekend staffing requirements.

The SC changes should have been the only changes for at least a year and that's it.

Let me give you one anecdotal story. May 2012, buddy of mine matched had all weekends off minus one Sunday. He flew 11 days, sat SC another 3, total of 14 days dedicated to work. I had the same schedule but all weekends off, 1 sat 0 SCs and flew a single 3-day. I was at 30%, he was at 50%. That’s not a good system.

A lot of this mind you is a moo point. I think I see the company’s fix for preventing pilots from flying 0 hours and that’s having more 65 hour lines and cutting reserve by 25% or so. Maybe even more the next go around. That’s one way to get the average hours flown by a reserve pilot increased to that 60 PBS staffing formula number.

Yes,

But being the last day of the month this is the best time to take the snapshot. The numbers are pretty well spread out. I have yet to see the "fictional" senior pilot sitting at home surfing APC and eating bon bons all month with a RAW of zero.

If you are saying the system is not perfect - I will agree with you. If on the other hand you think the system unduly burdens the Junior Pilots I respectfully disagree.

Think about it - the instant a Pilot gets into bucket two, all other things being equal, he goes to the back of the list. So the only disparity that can be attributed to seniority is a 1 bucket difference.

Anything greater than a 1 bucket difference, and a lot of stuff while in the same bucket is sheer luck, good and bad. This works both ways. If you are senior and you are the only 3 day bubba available, congratulations you are the new "owner" of that crappy three day that no line holder wanted to pick up!

Yes the QOL of the senior reserve guys is better - but not unfairly so.
I would say the difference of QOL between a senior reserve and a junior reserve is no different than the QOL difference between a senior line-holder and a bottom line-holder. And will go further to say that this difference is even less in some categories (LAX 73N) where the bottom line-holders get a month of Crapola!

I switch back between a line and reserve and have experienced the good and bad of both.
