Default Fatigued vs mechanical issue

After watching the video it sounds like the DP was trying to get the crew to say the correct legal thing for the tapes (and in case of any internal tape talk/lettered government agency needing to listen to that tape) vs dropping the F word in flight. Also surprised how the captain said he didn’t ask for the DP to be called in the first place. How would the rest of you have handled it?

Why talk to MX about a reset while airborne? Is that even a thing anymore unless you're out near the CP?

Run the checklist, go back and land.

Even though on tape you just said it would be FATIGUING to continue across the NAS without A/T? Safety of flight issue be dammed?

This whole scenario is really bizarre. Why level off at 3,000 to diagnose an autothrottle INOP? Maybe there's some legitimate reason for that in the 757. However, it is also strange how when contacting ATL Radio he does not ask for maintenance or dispatch. Meanwhile, as the issue has been handled, you're burning thousands of pounds of fuel in vectored holds at low altitude, waiting for a duty pilot to give you permission to call in fatigued. Yikes.

I'd have been smarter about what I said over the radio. That being said, assuming I was fit to fly just minutes prior as evidenced by my releasing the parking brake, losing my autothrottles is fairlly benign and assuming the FO agreed, we'd continue to our destination.

Maybe he wasn't fit to fly to start with...

It's not really a big deal in the 757 and having thousands of hours in planes without autothrottles, I wouldn't have even stopped the climb. Plan to continue assuming the FO is comfortable and try to troubleshoot with mx control to see if we can get them back for convenience.

But, if he was not comfortable, i can see that POV, just skip the cringe conversation over the radio, tell them you're going back, land, and worry about it on the ground.

There is no easier aircraft to fly with manual throttles than the 757. They add zero fatigue at cruise. I think the crew had a delay before departure but don't know how long. The fatigue call maybe should have been made on the ground. I don't understand the duty pilot getting involved at all. I would have told him to take a hike. Airborne you don't waste time with someone not involved in the flight. It's between the pilot in command and the dispatcher.

On the 757 the A/T reset CB's are even listed in the QRH to allow you to pull them and reset without MX call. Many pilots don't realize it though as it is listed in the very back of the QRH right after a blurb about CB policy.

According to FR24 it was a 2.5 delay on a redeye. Captain didn't have to release the brake if the delay was too much. Seems the fatigue card was played awfully early in the discussion...
