We don't have the depth in crew scheduling, crew tracking or crew accommodations required for recovery. It doesn't make sense to carry that many extra people either. What we need is a group of crosstrained employees from another workgroup that could be brought in to help recover the operation. We would need a recovery group about 3x the size of our normal staffing.
Giving the pilot assist staff full training / authority to perform scheduling functions would be a good start. We also need the ability to send messages directly to crew scheduling, crew tracking, and crew accommodations — rather than waiting on hold or relaying messages through other groups.

First timers going through a major airline multi-day airline meltdown reminds me of the old joke about a seasoned pilot vs a new pilot.
New pilot: “What’s it doing?!?”
Seasoned pilot: “Oh, it’s doing that again.”
Pilots can’t fix this even if they want to. They can profit from it though.
May as well. Because you’re going to be dealing with passed off passengers for months without premium pay anyway.
(Now say a prayer of thanks you’re not a gate agent today)

The problem is that management expects employees to bail them out of every bad decision they make.
Obviously most airlines were impacted by the IT issue but when it's 3 days in a row that Delta cancels more flights than United/AA combined then you know the problem is right here at Delta...and not "everywhere".
We are finally at a point where staffing with crews is decent and not as barebones as it has been the last decade or so. But obviously the amount of people and the technology they have doing the behind the scenes work just isn't there.
But hey...i'm sure Ed will still get his multi-million dollar bonus, we'll do more stock buybacks, and in a matter of weeks everyone will forget what just happened. In the meantime we probably burned 1/4 billion dollars this weekend because of poor leadership. That's probably about $50 millnio right out of our pockets in lost profit sharing.
All those millions spent on [mod edit] aren't helping much now are they?

All those millions spent on idiotic DEI initiatives and race quotas aren't helping much now are they?

Just sat there doing nothing, as opposed to what? This is why a lot of us get out of the flight deck during unresolvable IROPs rather than try to put on a show that makes it look like we have the power to do anything about it. Unless a trip was built and coverage for it was run by scheduling, there’s not much a pilot can do.
