This is a management issue. They have to…

…manage.
We all want to see Delta succeed, but it has to be compliant with the contract. This is the same company that lobbied to removed state sick in Minnesota, operated charters with SkyWest. This is a management problem. The PWA gives them the tools they need to deal with this kind of meltdown. I’ll be at work ready to help with a compliant assignment

Absolutely. If the company wants better contractual provisions for this type of situation, they can negotiate for it.

Yeah.. I'm with you. Delta should have recovered and was easily outdone.(SWA is a nonplayer in this) The glitch should have never happened, but it will happen again. Followed by, there should be a better contingency plan, but it doesn't exist or wasn't executed. The airport-goers are the ones who seemed pretty lenient IMO.

there should be a better system than go through WS coverage, then OOBWS, then GS to get a flight covered during this time. That takes at least 3 hours to get someone to work a flight. “Hey, I’m at the gate and can work the flight. Pay me 200% and we’ll be on our way”

or they could have used the VAS tool they now have with the contract.

There already is. 23.M.7. The company can build a rotation for an available pilot, hand it to them right away as an IA at 200%, then pay another pilot an additional 100%.

None of that helps when the support staff is nowhere to be found though.

well they really dropped the ball on how to handle recovery, granted the crew tracking systems are probably still messed up

Kind of hard to recover when the communication is non existence. No excuse for that. Delta's IT has always been way behind and probably always will be. When you have managers that get paid bonuses for coming in under budget for their department there is no incentive to spend more than minimum. Wish we would stop raising dividend, buying stock back and take that money to rebuild the whole IT structure at Delta. Anyone heard from management? Guess they can't be reached either.

Assuming a future PWA were to cover it, there would have to be some more coordination involved before pilots just flock to the airport looking for a plane to fly.

Exactly this. If we just start throwing the PWA out the window because of some disaster, it sets an extremely dangerous precident for “well last time things melted down we did this” as it slowly becomes the new normal. No thanks, follow the contract. Let them figure it out, and let them figure out how they need to fix the system to prevent this from happening again (but who am I kidding).

Important to note this is PWA limited to within 3 hours of report.
