We have ~17k pilots. Say, maybe 7k are at work on any given day as a conservative estimate. Roughly 28k FAs, so maybe 13k working.
That’s 20k crew members out in the system every day. How many crew trackers/schedulers do we have working a normal shift? 20-30? 40 maybe? That works when most of those 20k are on time and on their original rotations. But man once the snowball starts it’s just a wholly inadequate amount.

I submit carrying an extra % of these low-salary folks is FAR cheaper than what the company has lost over the last 3 days.

This right here. Like "just in time logistics", they hire just enough Trackers, Schedulers, Crew Assist, etc folks to manage normal ops, with zero ability to handle a major IROP, all while patting themselves on the back for thier 'IROP recovery' gains. Laugable in the lens of the last couple days.

They miss calling a pilot on reserve, now no one on SC, now that trip has to go out as a GS or IA, or they RR other pilots, in some cases paying quadruple pay for their eff up.
They could fix this with better automation, but who are we kidding. If you’re in charge of making decisions that could cost the company thousands, or maybe tens of thousands of dollars in direct payroll costs, there shouldn’t be anything “low salary” about it. And we’re not even talking about the indirect costs.
Then you get the meltdown scenarios, and it’s a dumpster fire.
Scheduling and tracking have been exactly the same way, with the exact sub par performance, for as long as I’ve been here. They can never seem to fix what appears to be a systemic, silo driven problem, which is actually characteristic of a lot of issues.

"This is completely unacceptable. We need to find a way for our crews to get a hold of scheduling during an IROP." -- RA, a long time ago, during a previous IROP.

the recovery is pretty pathetic. I thought we learned in 2016ish that it’s best to just cancel the whole thing and stick everyone into rest. Then rebuild the whole airline. This rolling put out of the fire strategy that kinda works with weather or other “normal” IROPs doesn’t seem to work in A-bomb situations.
I’m now on over 2 hours since I sent crew assist a message. It has yet to even be assigned to someone.

At the rate they are deadheading people around right now they won’t be able to sell tickets to passengers because planes will be full of deadheaders.

Neither can any of the passengers stuck with me. Patients are being tested for sure. Flights delayed or cancelled due to no crews. It is complete incompetence on all fronts. If you can avoid going to an airport today it would probably keep you sane. Might want to think about driving to work if you live within 5 hours. People are getting drunk and fed up, it's going to get interesting in an hour or so. Good luck
