Default LOSA

Instead of the one month of observations it is now going to be a continuous program. 80-90 events a month instead of 500 in one month. LOSA will sit in the jumpseat which means less jumpseats available and something might want to consider if you are a commuter. LOSA job also only pays 5 hrs a day it seems. Doubt there will be many volunteering for any flights over 5 hrs.

Must be some less than stellar trends in FOQA and ASAPs.

Lots of junior people, low time pilots, low time CAs everywhere, not just Delta.

I’m fine with this.

Most airlines that do LOSA actually do it this way with a continuous process and Delta was actually the outlier to rely on LOSA blitz's every couple years.

I’m guessing it’s the older close to retirement guys whose minds aren’t as sharp as they’d like to believe and their skills even less so. See how that works. You say something ridiculous, i turn around and say something just a little less ridiculous.

What’s there to consider? I book jumpseat on flight with one flight to spare. If not available, book jumpseat on backup and try to non-rev on first. If neither available, try to non-rev and first and ask for positive space on second. I never stress about booking jumpseat to work. Now home is a different story.

if you book the jumpseat on your backup, you’re taking the jumpseat from what may be someone’s primary.

if you don’t get on your primary, use the UTC policy to get positive spaced on your backup.

My strategy as a commuter was to never book a jumpseat to work. I commuted hub to hub, so my to work flight might have been someone else’s go home flight. IMHO booking a jumpseat is for getting home.

Make sure to have a back up flight. List as a non rev on primary flight, if there are no seats at boarding time, ask if jumpseat is available. If not, don’t stress.

The company will get you to work. Commuting successfully is all about having a stress free mindset.

Not completely true, I was pretty involved in LOSA at a prior major and it was a once every few years event with each observer doing 10 observations IIRC. At that carrier it paid 90 hours credit for the month which sounded like a great deal until you realize how long it takes to write up each flight. It was roughly 8-10 hours of work per flight until I got pretty good and the last half of flights was roughly 5-7 hours. Of course the more complex or issues that arise on a given flight would require more time writing. I absolutely loved the work though and think it’s extremely valuable to the safety of our industry that said… this pay is absolutely pathetic. I want to so badly apply and maybe still will but even being on the lowest paid fleet I can do way less work and make substantially more. Big loss on the company and ALPA’s part for this.

So what? It’s my right to do so, and if I get on my primary I’ll cancel the jumpseat so someone else can have it without waiting to the 15 prior.

But why even do that when you're gonna get positive space anyway?
