New BOS A330 base coming
#52
Realistically probably only LHR. DUB/LIS as well. AMS in the winter is iffy, same as CDG.
This is good news for us. It means we are looking to expand our European flying with our own metal. Plenty of 330 deliveries coming so it seems the target for those aircraft are going to majority of the European market. I also like to see that the ATL superbase is going to be lessened with opening of BOS. I don't think you'll see a draw down from the NY base though. It looks like DTW might be the place that gets the most effect from personnel wise from this move. In the end I see this as a growth move on the company's part, it was long past due. Now we have 2 bases in the NE from which to launch destinations in Europe. That'll be good movement and I'm very happy to see they finally chucked a rock and opened the BOS base with a WB to lead it off. This will give JB a run for their money, especially as they start to onboard the XLR there.

This is going to affect NYC and probably DTW more than ATL on 330.

Guys and gals will come out of the woodwork for a BOS base, but mostly senior NYC-based pilots (widebody.) The question is where the flying comes from to fund BOS and whether or not there will be backfills. More specifically: Which 330 base now has the most BOS departures.

Just talked to a friend who lives near BOS. He is not really happy with the base opening. Currently he does what I did as a commuter. Drops a good part of his schedule and picks up all the broken up W trips through Boston. There are also similar trips that can be picked up in the initial bid package. 4 day trips that fly as 3 day trips paying 21 hours with 14 hours of block were always a good thing. Plus you got PS at least one way.

Fangs already touched on it. Flying gets pulled into the new base from others as the rotations for that base are contrcuted. BOS was decided on because to have reliable orignating flights int'l you pretty much need a base there. BOS is becomign a big market for us now. The flow thru rotations that have BOS dept to Europe that are parts of trips which begin in another base were becoming problematic (fatigue, crew issues, weather dealys etc). Trips are now to be built BOS-XXX-BOS, most will be like this, sure some 6 days will flow in there but the reason those 6 days were constructed, ostensibly, was to position a jet and crew in BOS to then fly on to Europe. That should change now with the BOS base. The base has to be staffed, some say mostly NY folks but I think that will depend on several factors. Also, we are not winding down any flying in the NY base, so those trips need crews still. NY is a major NE hub, now we have 2. There will be some good movement and backfills into NY as well as maybe some other bases, but ATL being our largest pilot base will see some decrease as the BOS base picks up some of those trips with its own crews now. It's the 4th of July. I've got some grandkids on the way over so I got to get to grillin. You all have a great holiday, especially those of you out flying today

I remember a base visit at Memphis where they told us that the MEM base was a big part of Delta's future and that it would be around for the long haul. The next AE a few weeks later closed the base.
