The company opens bases when it is financially in their favor. 95% of that is trip credit and maybe 5% hotel costs. They don't care where pilots want to live or fly from.

When you're able to deviate home and get all that extra credit it's a good deal. It's not prevalent enough to go to everyone but it sounds like that pilot was senior enough to get it reliably. This is sorta like some of the rolling thunder guys saying we should want chaos because it pays them really well.

He would rather due a 1 way commute and get paid 21 hours verses no commute and get paid 15:45 with a two man crew. 12 days of work nets him 84 hours. 12 days flown directly out of BOS gets him 63 hours. He probably can hold the longer trips out of BOS like ATH or TLV but still works a whole lot harder than easy AMS and CDG flights.
The bid package will be interesting on how the company builds the trips to minimize credit. They could for example run W trips through ATL and have ATL crews due W trips through BOS rather than 3 day trips. SLC will be in play for W trips from BOS as they would have zero credit.

When day 1 is DH BOS or there's a long BOS layover, yes. This is the exact reason for the base and the financial sense of it. ANC locals used to do this a lot.

What transoceanic destinations out of BOS are (or will be) two man crews only?

London, paris have potential. Highly unlikely though, especially in the winter time coming back though due to winds

Anything UK plus CDG and AMS would be contractually legal. CDG might not meet the 8 hours home in the winter. We once flew all of those out of NYC with two man crews. The FAA stepped in when we exceeded 8 hours to many times on the AMS and CDG flights. Now the FAA rule is 9 hours so it's a contractual issue.

BOS-DUB would be, that's currently on the ER as a two man.

Realistically probably only LHR. DUB/LIS as well. AMS in the winter is iffy, same as CDG.

This is good news for us. It means we are looking to expand our European flying with our own metal. Plenty of 330 deliveries coming so it seems the target for those aircraft are going to majority of the European market. I also like to see that the ATL superbase is going to be lessened with opening of BOS. I don't think you'll see a draw down from the NY base though. It looks like DTW might be the place that gets the most effect from personnel wise from this move. In the end I see this as a growth move on the company's part, it was long past due. Now we have 2 bases in the NE from which to launch destinations in Europe. That'll be good movement and I'm very happy to see they finally chucked a rock and opened the BOS base with a WB to lead it off. This will give JB a run for their money, especially as they start to onboard the XLR there.
