Why did management head fake with LAX 220, only to surprise everyone with SLC 220? I truly do not understand the secret squirrel games.

I don't really think it is anything more than our marketing dept and changing market conditions along with the elimination of the 767 on international flights. Once marketing says " we have X number of destinations internationally on the same type of aircraft, you almost have the have a base for reliability.

I don't know why anyone believes anything they say on this subject. They've proven many times that what they say isn't worth the paper it's written on. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see SLC330 spots on the AE and no BOS base at all lol.

BOS base makes sense, lots of Euro starts.
More importantly it's a one hour drive for me. JFK has become such a painful slog, used to be 2:30 consistently, now routinely 4 hours.
I had a teaser of BOS on the 320 then covid put a wet blanket on that.

When got hired at NWA they were closing the BOS base, nice to see there is a chance...optimistic!

I think this is the case. They keep wanting to grow international out of Boston, but crew reliability has been painful due to no base there. You can much more easily reroute some NB crews and play the shell game as people move through BOS, but that’s not the case with WB.

They have moved the football many times...agree anything is possible and predictable.

Just talked to a friend who lives near BOS. He is not really happy with the base opening. Currently he does what I did as a commuter. Drops a good part of his schedule and picks up all the broken up W trips through Boston. There are also similar trips that can be picked up in the initial bid package. 4 day trips that fly as 3 day trips paying 21 hours with 14 hours of block were always a good thing. Plus you got PS at least one way.
With the high credit time many of the Europe trips will have flown from BOS as a 3 day I would expect you will see a lot of 6 day trips covering the SLC flying on W patterns. The other option would be 2 man crews on the short Europe to offset the credit.

The company really should have talked to him before deciding to open the base.

I think BS explained it as crew resources being the last in the line of decisions. Network makes a small
change which makes fleet planning make some changes that result in larger changes to pilot staffing decisions and he doesn’t know when they are coming.

I don’t think it’s secret squirrel as much as they just don’t know. I give it a 50/50 that BS sends a crew resource email saying that changes were made in forecasting and the BOS base has been postponed.
