We’re a learn the gouge airline… And that is a big problem in my opinion.
The part Delta did right about training is the e-brief videos. I watched those over and over because I knew I'd only have 60-90 minutes in the sim to demonstrate proficiency on any given day and that I'd likely only have one or two shots per event to get it right. I'd even imitate the pacing and vocal tone of the e-brief video pilots during the maneuver to drill it into my head. This is what sets my civilian training (FlightSafety mostly) apart from military--civilian training generally assumes proficiency in flying maneuvers before you ever step into the sim. In the military the philosophy of "Pilot, Teach Thyself" is used as well (hence why it can feel like you get your soul crushed if you show up to the brief not ready to instruct the instructor on what you plan on doing that day), but you also squeeze 2 months of training into 6 months in many programs so there is usually time to repeat items or just get reps. I can probably count on one had the number of two engine go arounds--probably our fleet's most dorked up maneuver--I did in 737 initial at Delta. I probably did more go arounds in one sortie during similar military training.

I think most here talking about it being easy had already been through an airline program? So the learning curve had already been overcome? It was mostly hard for me because each day required me to study something new to mastery and then on to the next thing without ever feeling like I had a chance to do it more than once. I never had to repeat an event. Additionally I was doing it as a more mature aviator and learning new things gets harder as you get older. Purely my perspective.
The pressure to be proficient on a maneuver on the first attempt was the biggest source of stress for me. So many things seemed to go unsaid during training. When I rotated on my first 737 sim the trim wheel started moving on its own (as it does). So I applied the KC-135 boldface and cut out the trim. Oops. Haha.

I found AALs training to be much better than ours. It was nice to do some systems training with an instructor then do some sim time. Indoc was ok but the KDA chant day was a bit much 🤣.

I mean our training at Delta is objectively lacking compared to a lot of other airlines. I definitely feel for guys coming from non 121 jobs. I agree the e-brief videos are good, but those are a relatively new addition. Probably a contribution from some of the new blood that has been hired recently and in the training department.

TH was excellent for EDV. Had him for numerous events and he was a superb instructor.

My regional was better. AA was a lot better. I was shocked when I got to Delta. It’s all manageable if you have some modicum of experience in 121 ops to back it up with. But it must really suck for the non-121 folks going through.

Ive been 8yrs at delta and e-brief were already here.

But yes, Delta training sucks for non part 121 pilots.
