WASHINGTON, April 29 (Reuters) - U.S. House and Senate negotiators said early Monday they had reached a deal to boost air traffic controller staffing and boost funding to avert runway close-call incidents, but will not increase the airline pilot retirement age to 67 from 65.
The U.S. House of Representatives in July voted 351-69 on a sweeping bill to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that would also raise the mandatory pilot retirement age to 67 but the Senate Commerce Committee had voted in February to reject the retirement age increase. International rules would have prevented airline pilots older than 65 from flying in most countries outside the United States.

“The bill also requires airplanes to be equipped with 25-hour cockpit recording devices and directs the FAA to deploy advanced airport surface technology to help prevent collisions.“

Uh, what exactly does this mean for us?

Just a longer “tape”. Apparently the AA 777 that had the rwy incursion/crossed at JFK only had a couple-hour CVR and so when they took off for Europe, the conversation of that event was overwritten, preventing the NTSB from investigating.

Ok. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t video. I had heard rumors of that.

CVRs

FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, TITLE III—AVIATION SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
Subtitle A—General Provisions, Section 366

25-HOUR COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER.
(a) IN GENERAL.—
(1) COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER FOR NEWLY MANUFACTURED AIRCRAFT.—A covered operator may not operate a covered aircraft manufactured later than the date that is 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act that is not equipped with a cockpit voice recorder set to record the most recent 25 hours of data.
(2) COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER FOR COVERED AIRCRAFT.—Not later than 6 years after the date of enactment of this Act, a covered operator may not operate a covered aircraft that is not equipped with a cockpit voice recorder set to record the most recent 25 hours of data.

this is on page 286 of the bill. Interesting provision regarding rule making for the ability to access FDR data for overwater aircraft without needing physical access to the device is in section 352 (pg 252).

Oh yeah, thankfully it doesn't look like that's part of the bill. Big fat "no" to that!

They may have the opportunity to listen to discussions on the finer points of new balance shoes, Miatas, "solid" investment strategies (redundant, I already said Miata) and the Republican party.
