We have been trying to add so many pilots I'm not fully convinced we can afford to let much training capacity sit idle.

I heard that SLIs are being told to expect to fly 6 months this year. With most being between April and October.

Depends on the fleet. Some flew a ton last year too.

My understanding is a higher percentage of training is being done by DPS because they are cheaper.

They hired SLI’s during the hiring boom. Then shifted more training to DPS, so now some fleets training departments are artificially overmanned.

tunes can probably weight in with actual answers, but I think certain amounts of training must be done by SLIs and they can just send everyone to the line and use DPS.

SLIs must do 50% of all training events. Also, when SLIs rotate to fly the line, they keep their SLI pay rate.

Correct.
What percentage were the doing in say 2021 vs today? There is now a max percentage DPS can do, but if they were doing about 30% then and are now doing 45%, they would need less SLIs.
Based on grumblings, it sounds like DPS are doing more than they were or a few departments just over hired. I don’t know the answer.

Is it just me or are most DPS instructors subpar and not very knowledgeable on current procedures? (Some are great..but it's very inconsistent compared to SLIs).

There are many excellent DPS instructors. There are also some that have never worked as a delta pilot and that can have predictable challenges. Lots of wisdom amongst them, but they have to pick up a lot of line knowledge by a few jump seat rides and osmosis. There are definitely a lot more events being taught by DPS than there used to be. It is pretty easy for a manager at any level to see it as an easy way to trim costs. Over time if it can be demonstrated that less SLI’s are necessary to meet the 50% requirement, it would seem likely that that work group would be trimmed via attrition or longevity. This seems like a middle step of a multi step process.
