And the mil job can be a huge safe haven during economic downturns.

Obviously 20% is somewhat arbitrary, but seems to hold up fairly well historically.
I’m at about 66% seniority. Bailing at ten years. Unit getting BRACed and having to switch planes made a tough decision pretty easy though.

I was looking to switch units during COVID when everyone thought furloughs were inevitable. It was surprisingly easy to find squadrons with openings, specially if you're already rated and just need an aircraft qual. The revolving door from AD to Guard/Res stops and those guys still have top end attrition. It's a personal risk assessment we all have to make, but I wager you're still better off getting out and then trying to get back in from the street if you want/need to down the road.

I didn't realize there was another round of BRAC in the hopper...

I was already leaning Delta before hand, but this might have solidified it to me.

I always hear about guys saying to live in base and pick the airline based on drivability, but maybe that’s not always the best advice. There’s more factors to consider than just proximity to base.
Living in base will probably make you 1.5 to 2 million more dollars in your career. It will also give you much more time at home. If you like United bases more and want to fly widebodies to more than 5 destinations I’d say go to United.

yeah wrong word. My reserve tanker unit was halfway through conversion to the 46 from the 10 when we heard we were being dissolved.

It appears there doesn't have to be a BRAC. A wing in my state recently lost their jets and have transitioned to a cyber wing.

I’m definitely trying to move to base at some point or have a place in base for this reason. How easy is it to try and schedule your trips back to back? If I buy a place in ATL I could go down there for half the month and do all my flying and then spend the rest of the month at home. Or do like one week on one week off. Is that kind of schedule possible?

Im separated with a kid so I’m thinking this kind of schedule could work well

If you bid reserve it’s not too hard to jam all your reserve days into one long block. You’ll need a little bit of seniority though since the most junior reserves end up getting forced to work every weekend which will naturally break up your days off. Even senior reserves can get coverage awards over major holidays. If you try to bid a line all crammed together you’ll need to get some trips that have 30 hour layovers or you’ll run into FAR 117 issues.

it’s definitely the right word. The politicians and generals simply stopped speaking the term ‘brack’ while moving full speed ahead with the plan. Why create inconvenient problems with public statements of their intentions? Seems to be happening in a lot of places these days but that’s not important right now.

As for the suggestion to quit and rejoin the military later I’d like to suggest that it is TERRIBLE advice. Especially if you wish to rejoin or transfer later on to a flying unit. Consider staying current and qualified in the military until you’re ready to leave- and then do that without looking back.

also if furlough protections are priority number 1 I’d suggest the OP re-examine why he’s leaving swa in the first place- it may be an emotional decision based on current, short-term circumstances.

living in base is definitely a smart play considering your family situation.
