I'm currently a NB A in ATL, and I'm strongly considering 350 B in ATL. I could have held it on this past mock AE.
I'm hoping to spend fewer days at work per month, and I am attracted to the new and more comfortable airplane. I've snooped some schedules of guys junior to me on the 350, and they are either flying 3 day Europe trips on Tuesdays or bidding reserve and not getting used for a month or more. My wife and I live well below our means, so I'm willing to trade some pay for QOL. I flew 7ER B out of NYC for my first year here, and I really enjoyed the international flying.
My major concern is that I upgraded when I grew tired of the free unscheduled flying lessons, political diatribes, and unsolicited career and financial advice. I was an ATL NB B when I bid for upgrade. What's the culture like on the 350? Do most guys get to cruise and pull out the newspaper or a book, or is top of climb the signal to tell "junior" how he hasn't earned the right to sit in the right seat, and he should feel fortunate that the way has been paved by those magnanimous souls in the left seat?

Get used to only landing in your hub on the widebody.

Depends on the base I think. I showed up one time and the Captain said I'm all good on landings, you guys can have them. I about fell out of my chair. 🤣 But seriously, in my time on the WB (DTW), the Captains seemed to be about getting everyone their takeoffs/landings.

It’s happened twice to me where the captain has asked me and the other FO how we were doing on landings. One captain even let us have both landings.
In the end, it’s their call, but it’s just another one of those things I’ll do differently one day.

I don't get why this is a thing here at mother D (at least on the ER in ATL). Other places I worked at this wasn't the case. They actually trusted the FO to land in a place outside of the US ha. I too have had it only a few times where the captain didn't care and actually gave us the option to get all the landings. Both Captains were NYC in my sample data (thanks fellas).

I never understood why that’s a thing. Must be a “this is the way it was when I was an FO” thing.

I was Detroit and that's the way I always did it...and mostly the way most captains did it. Several times the FO's had no interest in any leg as they wanted a lapse in currency (training paid more$$). A few times it was like pulling teeth to get them to commit to taking a leg at all.
And, I always said I didn't care what leg I was gonna fly as one 10K piece of concrete looked very similar to another 10K piece of concrete.
BTW....I always KNEW how everybody was doing on landing currency and discussed it at the brief and solicited input and checked their schedule to see if getting a landing would help or was just wasting ammunition in case everyone was tight. You can look it up in icrew

Well crap dude. You and I must be the only 2 captains at Delta that didn't steamroll the "younger" generation with flying lessons, right wing propaganda, informing them how blessed they are, in between showing them pictures of my boat and 2nd &3rd homes with my trophy wife in a bikini all the while cajoling them with my exploits with my 25 yo girlfriend.

Some of the best discussions I've had were somewhere over an Ocean or Jungle with one of my fellow crew. I've lurked here for a long time, I've read some very nasty stuff written by both sides. Thankfully the vast majority of our pilot group are not represented by those posters. When reading here I have to take 99% of the things with a grain of salt standpoint. However, it is still a great place to get information and interpretation or at least have someone more familiar with say, the PWA, point you in the right direction. Personally I think the pilot group is in good hands. I am concerned about experience, but if we are all professionals then we'll work through the bumps along the way. Lots and lots of talent here.

As Captain, I never feel/felt like I had to drive the discussion(s) on the flight deck (cockpit). I'm a broad reader and spent my life living in many different countries and cultures (my parents were missionaries). I never talked religion unless the topic was brought up by someone, and even then kept it low key and non-divisive. Same with politics. Personal matters are just that - personal. None of my business really. If you'd like to discuss, I have no issue. And my intentions are never to sway opinion or belief.
