Then again, crew tracking doesn’t know how far lax, sna, ont or ewr, jfk, lga are from each other on the ground.

As always, BWYWWWYB. There will be surprises on the next several AE’s (at least), and you cannot get what you don’t bid. At least for now, bidding is volatile, and you don’t want to miss a chance.

How do you know when to put a MD? Will the company let you know before hand or should you always have a current MD bid in?

I get what you are saying, but this is just not possible. The new PWA now defaults to a 150 day (5 month) conversion, unless 10% of actual awards are displacements - which will be very rare. They still have one super-long 335 day window annually if they post displacements, but with the hiring they have already announced for the indefinite future, they will have no choice but to increase the frequency of AE’s going forward. And again, the 5-6 month gap we are currently in is driven by specific short-term needs, not a new norm.

If there aren’t displacements posted, you can’t get displaced. But even if there is only one displacement posted, many more than one person can get displaced as crap rolls downhill. Don’t let the company choose for you. Jaww’s excellent point above.
The worst case happened in the massive Covid displacement bid, there was a 1600 seniority number 7ERA that went to 737NB. He/she could have held nearly anything. I’d about guarantee that pilot forgot to have a bid in, and that category was closing! Expensive mistake. Lucky for him/her, it was short lived.
Likewise, there are always more positions awarded than posted, due to backfills (contingent vacancies). So just because there aren’t positions posted, bid it anyway!
*Edit* I know this is a repeat for some here, but there are lot of new-ish pilots who may not have heard some of this.

I do leave VD blank as that’s a whole other can of worms and I don’t necessarily wish to give up MD benefits, especially if it’s my category going away. There are lots of VD v MD discussions and, luckily, I don’t think anybody needs to be overly concerned about that right now.

Like FangsF15 said, I just have one in now just in case I forget or I’m on vacation or life support. Like Fangs said, it’s free.

They did it with the MD-88 when they were bring it all to East Coast, and then eventually just ATL.
Assuming DL continues with their ER plan, SEA and LAX will eventually close as those ER move East, so displacements in those categories.
