Sort of. You can not leave the US to fly to Europe without an APU, but you can return to the US. IIRC it lowers your ETOPS from 180 to 120 minutes.

Making some bidding decisions here: Does the 7ER really not have intercom? You guys out there shouting at each other over avionics fans slowly losing your hearing and getting tinnitus?

(Not judging the pilots but rather the company for not retrofitting them)

Spent eight years on the ER. No shouting. Standard is removing headsets above FL180, turn up the speakers and keep the trucker mic handy. It’s a very comfortable way to fly.

correct. No hot mic on that airplane. Very annoying DL won’t put it on.

I did a few years like you mentioned and a few years with the DC Pro X. No comparison on fatigue level (way less) and clarity of ATC communication with the Pro X. I’d wear them all the way across the pond.

you definitely do have to talk loud at each other, and plenty of long time CAs have mentioned that their hearing sucks. It’s certainly not great for our hearing long term.

I'm only overly critical of this because I went through a period of temporary tinnitus a few months flying military with an improperly fitted helmet. The ringing drove me nuts but luckily it went away after several months. Now, I'm very strict with my hearing and going no headset is a hard no for me personally.

You can always wear earplugs… I do it all the time.

I hate when the captain wants to take the headset off above 180. I've got a full library on Spotify to listen to.

Bose Proflight with one ear in solves that problem.
