I definitely think the peaks and valleys in how and how many we have hired in the past 10 years will create some interesting seniority dynamics in the coming years.
Agreed. Makes the crystal ball even hazier...

We are hiring a much more age diverse range of applicants than in the past. There are new hires with less than 10 years before retirement and some less than 5. This will temper some of the ebb and flow as well.

We’re also hiring far younger pilots, every class looks to have a handful of 26 and under folks. Whereas pre COVID 25-26 would probably get you retiring in double digit seniority, it’s probably 200+ now.

You realize that after a year a 26 y/o is 27 so while still ahead of a new 26 won't change retirement seniority (yes, still most of the time, but retirement seniority doesn't look at that) It feels like you think they will remain 26 for the next 5 years.

Right, my point is how we are hiring younger people.
Whereas in 2020 Pilot A is age 26 and hired at DL, they’d retire maybe #30.
In 2023 pilot B is also 26 and hired, they might retire around #200.

The reason is that more people below 26 are being called in. I have a friend who was hired in 2015 I think at age 26, he will retire #2. More younger folks are being interviewed and hired. A person hired at age 40 might never see true WB A, based on the current # required to hold it.

I am March 20 hire, was hired 1 month prior to my 26 birthday. Says I will retire 17. So yeah that was 3 years ago. Now a 26 year old I agree is going to be looking in 1-200 range. I mean…not a big deal. And don’t count your chickens until they hatch!!

I was curious so I looked. And for simplicity sake I am using people’s age on January 1, so these numbers will be a little off due to people born in jan/ early Feb.

we have about 600 pilots under 30.

70 ish pilots on the seniority list who are under 26

17 who who under 25.

You could get hired at 26 and no break the top 100, or 24 and not break the top 10.

Thanks for checking, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. It’s not hordes, but every month it seems we hire a few of the sub-25 types. Hire like we do this year and it adds up, people coming here 35 and up will have vastly different careers than a similar age would a few years back. With the rate we’ve hired, it’ll take increasingly a younger age to get the same # for WB A, unless we push it beyond #4000 (most junior WB A on recent AEs)

I was hired around that same time and around the same age. It looks like we stall out a little bit between 40 years old and 55 years old and then the last 10 years will be top 900.

Ten years an area code is an impressive career. Likely 20 years a widebody captain if all goes well. Hats off to you (and a new contract).
