Prepare yourselves… 2023 AEs

They couldn’t care less about seat locks. That does even come into consideration when they are looking at AE’s. And furthermore, most pilots don’t immediately jump ship when their seat lock is up. This is all from BS.

This focus on seat locks from a bid two years ago is silly.

Exactly. I don’t understand the few vocal UNAs here thinking that their seat locks are even a consideration. Of the ~1900 UNAs, maybe 1,000 still have seat locks, or 1/15th of the list. Most came back to an airplane they wanted (no seat lock) or had the chance to upgrade or moved to an airplane they wanted (seat lock). There are many more people on either side of the UNAs that want to bid too.

I mean really the only thing the UNA seat locks would affect is WBB. Every UNA should be in the base of their choice right now, except maybe someone who got stuck on the 220 or 717, but realistically they should have been able to bid out of those at some point since no one was locked on the first award off of UNA. And of course any one of the UNA's has been able to bid CA this entire time, so that's a moot point. So if everyone is in their desired base, and someone doesn't want to upgrade, the only thing a lock does is prevent movement to a higher-paying B position, which is nearly every case is going to mean a WB B spot. It's conceivable that there won't be any of those spots left for NH's, or at least very few compared to the last few AEs.

You have a great point. I came back and bid the 717 to get my home base. On the next AE (a month later) I got the 320 in my home base and created the April 19th lock. A lot of folks didn’t do that and a lot of other folks took the upgrade later one so April 19th is out the window. On top of all that, a lot of my buddies are now in the “I’m enjoying my seniority” boat so they are staying out. I’d venture to say this massive seat lock release really isn’t going to be any different than other AEs. I never used to see it this way but the more I think about it it makes sense.

Edit: Pre-covid had #11,0000s as WBBs but that was about 6~ years then. Now 2020 hires are at that seniority and we have even more total pilots now

Money definitely does help one "embrace the suck" but not as much as "total consciousness" which many claim to achieve via the left seat.

Yea that’s a good point. You think there will always be WBB openings on every AE for the next couple of years? I wonder when the days of 5 year seniority to hold a WBB will come back.

my bet is 2032ish when the major retirements start to taper off for about a decade.
Pre Covid we were just getting to the major 12ish year run on retirements.
