Who's counting the numbers? Ah yeah, the government there.

Violent crime is indeed rampant in SF. Just ask anyone who's lived there for awhile.

How many of the street zombies kill each other every year? Go check out the coroner's reports. The bodies, when and if found, end up there. It' much higher than you can imagine. Crime is crime. You seem to be fine with saying"well it's only high property crime, other than that SF is great!" Well why? It's an indicator of a once fine city rotting away. Once they start with theft, and remain unprosecuted, it's just human nature to continue the progression. Sad to see what has happened there.

The 3 or 4 blocks around the hotel seems terrible when compared to fishermen’s wharf or Ferry’s or Chinatown or up by Japan town. I don’t feel safe until I leave the hotel area.

SFO is just the worst, if you are senior to me you should bid avoid all long SFO layovers... In actuality, in my last layover there, I walked over 5 miles and saw fewer than 5 homeless people, none of them bothering anybody. Great layover.

I walked through Union Square, then around the block, and grabbed a delicious meal at a local Burger Joint. Then got a iced Green Tea from Starbucks. Listened to some live jazz at some greenspace in an office park I walked past. Tons of people, including many tourists walking around the city. Just another example of a dangerous outing in SFO

At a certain point “feeling safe” is an internal perception. Why do you feel safe in XYZ city that has quantifiably worse crime than SF. Has anything happened to you there? I get that homeless people are unpleasant (especially LA and SF ones, they seem more aggressive), but the numbers don’t seem out of line with many other US cities. I lived in Philly for 7 years and it seemed like it was worse there (my perception only).

im a Juniorish ER A so I’m a San Fran 24 hour layover machine. I always feel safe there and walk around a ton. Sometimes Uber up to Marin County for a long hike then take the ferry back from Sausalito. Sometimes go to a giants game. Sometimes get sushi then have a whiskey and cigar at the Occidental.

the layover I feel the most unsafe at is in buckhead because I feel like I’m going to get run over crossing the street in that concrete jungle.

The two measurable drawbacks to SF is it’s expensive, and the drive to the hotel is long.

SF is a great layover and I will die on this hill.

Anecdotal stories are just that - anecdotal. Equally meaningless whether I had a great time walking around as a tourist or I am an NFL player and got shot in the chest. You can't even trust the crime statistics because many crimes are simply not reported and there are strong political incentives to portray ones city in the best possible light. Not to mention comparing current crime to the most violent year ever to show a reduction or comparing it to the safest year to show an increase. Ie - Cherry Picking. You know like when DALPA used to compare everything to our 2006 BK contract.

Corporate data is probably more useful because it is based on good old american $$$ and there are penalties for lying on financial reports. How much to rent a U haul one way from SFO to DFW? How much on the reverse route etc? Are fortune 500 companies moving in or moving out? Downtown occupancy rates etc. Are the CVS stores closing or are retailers expanding etc.

Finally, what makes a good layover is probably one of the most subjective things about being a Pilot.

I'll take JAN anyday.
And all this time I though 15 of the 19 Sept 11th hijackers came from Saudi Arabia…thanks for setting the history books straight.

But is there an Irish pub nearby?

SFO is one of my favorite layovers for food. Don't even need to walk more than a few blocks to get amazing eats.

Unless I’m misreading, he isn’t saying they came from turkey, he is saying if that kind of attack happens in a more western and secular Turkey, imagine a layover in the place where 15/19 hijackers came from and the country responsible for the brutal assassination of Khashoggi. Which would make sense because the topic he was talking about was layovers in Saudi Arabia after our new partnership with a state owned Saudi airline.
