717 here. About the only time I SET is if I'm thinking we'll have a wheels up time delay or I can see a big line in the que (flightradar24). In DTW, we have very few places that give us wheels up time and almost never have to wait to takeoff, so I'm generally starting both. Most places the difference in fuel burn and takeoff time is negligible. Check it out some time, you might be surprised at how little of a difference it makes.

717 was easy to taxi single engine. 73 is a struggle even when modestly loaded

Honestly how many SETs does it take to make up for the one clipped wing that might have been avoided had both pilots been looking outside?

Been a captain for a year and a half and I have done it maybe 2-3 times? Just way too many reasons NOT to SET.

have there been any clipped wing incidents with SET as a root cause? I’ve been here a while and haven’t heard of any

How many clipped wings happen with 2-engine taxi vs. 1-engine taxi?

That’s nice. I find a legit reason to start both on every leg. My only exception is a known, lengthy takeoff delay.

Captain's job is mainly to say "slow down" or "stop". (no one else can, or will)

Lots of new pilots on the payroll. Half my monthly trips have new hire assessments. This isn't the military. We're not mission critical; Jet-A isn't that precious. Burn it, this flight isn't that special.

I'd rather have them thinking about the takeoff, hold downs, slowdowns, windshears, s/e procedures and departure than saving $10 in gas before launching.

Single engine "wait-til-the-last-second to start Eng. #2" will return when hiring stops for a couple of years. Career first officers will become a thing again. But not for awhile.

(APU at the gate...If we're mildly uncomfortable, they're miserable, see #3 in the Delta pantheon of priorities...turn on the air conditioning..and didn't we already brief this at the start at the trip?).

Don't know of any clipped wings by SET 717s but that fleet has made some valiant attempts at a SETO. 🤣 #JustSayNoToSET...it's too complicated!

One of the reasons I do SET is if we are very very delayed pushing back and I need to get out of the ramp in a timely manner. As soon as we’re out, start the second one.

But with NH 90% of my trips, I just start both. It’s easier on them, once they have some time in the company, I feel more comfortable using a little more of their brain.

Some CAs likes to overwhelm their FOs for stupid things.

Depends on the engine, but it’s very rare the push crew disconnects before both engines are fired up. Caveat is GTF engines. But then again A220 you aren’t going to do SET.
