24 hours is not as long as you think. If you want to see any of the city (sightseeing or doing whatever activity you want to do) by the time you nap, shower, you would have to chose between working out or going to do your activity. By that time it’s late afternoon already. Then it’s early dinner time. Grab some food, good beer or wine, crash for the night. Not like we have a bunch of diverse layovers internationally so you’ll probably see what you want to see and then it’ll just become another city (with better food).
the whole point of the trip for a lot of people is do international. Go to the gym when you’re in DTW or SEA on your W rotation layover. Or on your days off. You won’t get fat because you didn’t run the treadmill at Paris. Have some time and enjoy where you’re at. Some people are way dramatic. It’s the same thing when you eat your meal and your captain tells you that you’ll be fat for eating that. I can barely put together enough calories on our trips, let alone eat too many.

An epic attempt at divisivness using humor by someone at Delta for 2-3 years.
Funny?...kinda
Divisive?...yes
Ignorant....possibly
Purposely insulting?....absolutely
Maybe someone who was hired 2 years ago and was ex-army, ex DAL FA ....because(reasons).. views normal pilot progression differently than the majority of pilots.
Look at the BES and SN the numbers tell the tale.
It's even more compelling at UAL. Recently they had several hundred unfilled captain NB vacancies. No unfilled WB capt or WB FO vacancies.
As I said 3 pages previously....it appears the NB guys feel the need to puff out their chest and denigrate the WB guys/flying at the same pace as WB does NB.
People are people....just don't call my baby ugly....cause them's fightin' words.

What if someone doesn't drink? Is widebody international not a good fit for them? Genuinely curious.. because it sounds like layovers are structured around having a few drinks (kind of like domestic layovers were years ago before they all went to 12 hours getting in past midnight).

I do agree with you but you don’t need to workout 24:7. The people who have weight issues aren’t from pounding a few beers on the layovers they have 3-4 times a month because they didn’t run the treadmill at the hotel. It’s more important to have a healthy life balance with exercise outside this job than stressing you need to run on the treadmill on a trip. Especially intl guys who generally get most of their month off. Added bonus is having hobbies that don’t involve working till your belly grows and hair falls out.
unless you are a working bee and work 20 days a month, then yeah you’ll need to hit hotel gyms regularly.
As far as this quality sleep on Europe layovers I have yet to see people master that one. Rarely will I hear someone in the van say they slept uninterrupted 7-8 hours. That’s not something easy to master. Unless I iron man the day, I think then I get my best sleep. But that’s just lunatic behavior in this industry (sarcasm)

tcco94 is spot on. 24 hours is not long, really. Now the longer layovers, maybe. For the most part I don't work out on int'l layovers. Mostly I get my steps in walking around. Usually got some other thing I want to do in my layover city. After the nap I'm usually out cruising around to meet the crew at the place and time we agreed to on the bus ride to hotel. Most of the places you can walk/train to. Or walk and cab etc. So that's what I do. I like the walk, after sitting in the tube for that long I like to move around a bit, but nothing really strenuous. Walking is fine for me. As for food, I really don't take the full meal(s). Just usually stick to fruit and greens. I'll pick around the meal if I must. As you age that airline meal will start to catch up to you. I'd rather gorge myself on some tasty food at our layover rather than waste my allotment on high calorie super salty food served on the jet.
So for me, I do my best to get out and enjoy the layover city I'm in. Meet the crew for dinner. Then return and go to bed fully expecting to wake up around 0330 or so. I have no trouble getting back to sleep after that. Usually a little light reading does the trick. You'll figure out a routine that works for your body and sleep pattern. And I workout when I'm home. Hope this helps.
