I also wish we had more latitude to not use it. Maybe my interpretation is too strict but I don't feel like I can ever not use it unless it's on MEL. I rode on a SWA j/s a bit ago and the CA flipped it down during taxi to check it and then stowed it for the remainder of the flight. I'd like to be able to periodically fly without it so I could feel confident if it was MEL'd.
I was thinking they ordered it more for the tailstrike aspect. Doesnt HUD give a warning if tailstrike is imminent. Flew it as FO for 5 yrs and never used it for a low vis anything.

Agreed.

3 years on the 737 (loved the jet BTW) and thought the HUD was nothing more than an expensive toy. Plus it's just something else you have to reprogram for a runway change.

I’ll concede it’s not necessary from a bean counter perspective, but it’s nice to have as a pilot.
Every thumper I've had in the 737 was sans HUD. I never flew it from the right seat. It's a PFD with a landing cheat. Try flying without a PFD. It's more about getting and being good with the equipment you normally use. If I haven't flown in a small single engine tailwheel in a while, the landings aren't great the first time. The 737 without the hud is different in that you have to change your habbits for information and sight picture. I think it's overkill but happy it's there. There are litterally no good excuses for a bad landing with the HUD.

For me it's easier to get a super smooth landing without the HUD, especially on a 900. Less information to process, just use eyeballs. Get cleared the visual on downwind into one of the Villes,(or JAN), turn off everything(AP,AT,HUD,FD), and have fun. I flew the 73 from the right seat as well tho

I found you could generate a very consistent decent landing with the hud. If however I really wanted to roll it on I put the hud up. Probably for the reasons you mention.

When we wrote the FCTM for the 73 and were training the LCPs we stressed a "smooth" landing is not desirable. Rather we prefer you to land it in the proper attitude, in the touchdown zone on the centerline. That's it. Nothing in there about "greased" landings for the 900.

I will quote you from section 6.5.1.2:

"A very smooth/soft touchdown is not essential, nor even desired, particularly if the runway is wet. During the flare the pilot should not concentrate on airspeed, but on aircraft attitude using external cues"

The data for tailstrikes on landing confirms that those that scrape the tail on landing are trying to "grease it on". That's no bueno for the -900. You shouldn't be doing it or teaching it. Some are even "trimming in the flare" a big no-no for that jet.

That is why we wrote the FCTM the way we did.

Whut?

I don't understand your comment here. "Basic airmanship".

Do you have somehting to add here, or are you just going to lob random non-specific grenades?

I'll play. What is the biggest cause of tailstrikes on the 737?
