Not all of them do…the original Delta orders do not have them. Some of the LATAM planes came with them already installed. Plan was to deactivate them until Airbus quoted the price to push around the paperwork. They are a great situational awareness tool, especially during pushback. I’m not sure if they are wired into the IFE, but I don’t think so.

Ah that makes sense. Delta never orders extras like that. What would also be nice is to have a camera feed of the cabin into the cockpit. Lots of airlines have them but I wouldnt expect it here.

I could care less about cost. The bus ain’t an RJ or a 73 - it’s plenty spacious to not hit your noggin. As a guy who has many thousands of landings with a HUD, I’d love to have one again. Having a FPM/VV is very useful. Think we’ll top that cloud deck in cruise? A FPM makes it obvious. And putting the airplane precisely where you want it on landing is a piece of cake, especially in gusty crosswinds. The cross check is way better too, especially SE. Obviously, it’s not required, and thousands of landings without one have gone just fine, but given the choice, I’d take one every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
On the 737 it's pointless. My landings are the same in either seat. Sure it's fun to use and kind of nice to tell if we're going to top some clouds..but experience and eye sight is just as good. And as far as lower mins, I've never needed it for takeoff.. and if the weather is cat3 I'm autolanding, not hand flying a hud approach. (Unless the autopilot is inop, but come on how frequent is that?)

I'm surprised the HUDs have remained on the 737s s long as they have.
Oh I totally agree Delta cares, which is why no DL Airbus has them. This is the same company (NW heritage) who will step over a dollar to same a dime, and wanted to save a few Pennies on the crap “Ferry seat” on the 320 by making it a permanent solution. Effing stupid.

Also agree about the taxi cameras. I think a business case could absolutely be made via safety savings, much less anything else. But alas…

Apparently NW, when they were ordering their initial CRJ’s, didn’t want to spend the money on an FMS, but Bombardier wouldn’t sell them without one.

I get it’s a joke, and that might feel good to say, but it’s nonsense. This ain’t a beginner’s flying school. That’d be like saying without a paper checklist, you’d have no clue what to do. Even the greenest NH FO would do just fine.

That said, it’s a ‘moo’ point.

My landings are way better from the left seat on the 73N. The radio alt coupled with the airspeed trends on the HUD is as close to cheating as you can get.

I’ll concede it’s not necessary from a bean counter perspective, but it’s nice to have as a pilot.

I’m sure over on the flight attendant’s message board, the FA’s are like, “Yeah but the Airbus has a side stick. It’s more comfortable for the guys up front”.

Are Delta 737s able to auto land Cat3? The 737 I flew (elsewhere) has fail passive and the only way to land Cat3 was hand flown with the HUD.

The 737 can't even auto control the cabin temperature.
