but why would we want HUDs? They are an expensive option and really don’t give us much except lowering our takeoff RVR by 200’. But on the planes I’ve flown with HUDs (or a box where the hud used to be) it sure is a target to hit your head on.
Have you ever flown with a HUD?

I could care less about cost. The bus ain’t an RJ or a 73 - it’s plenty spacious to not hit your noggin. As a guy who has many thousands of landings with a HUD, I’d love to have one again. Having a FPM/VV is very useful. Think we’ll top that cloud deck in cruise? A FPM makes it obvious. And putting the airplane precisely where you want it on landing is a piece of cake, especially in gusty crosswinds. The cross check is way better too, especially SE. Obviously, it’s not required, and thousands of landings without one have gone just fine, but given the choice, I’d take one every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Until one goes on MEL, and the hud cripples have no clue what to do.

While you "could" care less about the cost, I can assure you that Delta does. They wanted to remove the taxi cameras from the A350s and when the paperwork costs were factored in they decided to leave them. I personally think they are a really good safety item. I'm surprised the HUDs have remained on the 737s s long as they have.

From a pilots perspective the HUD is very nice and makes our job easier. From an operational/bean counter perspective I don't see much benefit. Best time I've seen it useful was allowing us to get into LGA with the CAT II SA mins. Other than that's it's most common use is as a tailstrike prevention aid which in itself likely justifies the cost

As a pax I thought it was a really bad place to have the lavatory right next to the cockpit door

Laid out properly I bet it is nice, but it just seems like they have been poorly laid out (ergonomically, not the display itself) in the planes I’ve flown with them. If I upgrade on the 737 I guess I’ll find out. But I bet that’s the only plane I would fly with one. (I think the odds of us getting 787s is somewhere between 1% and 0)
