Okay? I wasn't told to do those things during training; on the other hand, I was shown how to turn the ground air off during OE and it's a common practice in my fleet. If it's truly not allowed there would be more than just an obscure line in one base newsletter without any reference.

“my manual doesn’t say i can’t” and “everybody does it anyway” is really weak justification for almost anything

I'll also add that if I'm ever in the slightest doubt that the button I'm pushing isn't the air (since they sometimes vary from one station to another) I just ask the ground crew to do it, or call ops.

Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking that! I remember getting line checked once and I asked the FO if he had the ops frequency handy. The LCA interjected: “You mean the placebo frequency?”

What are we arguing exactly? If the CPO called me in and told me to stop doing it, I'd simply ask where it says it's not allowed and inform them I was trained during OE to push the big OFF button if the situation arises. If they failed to give me a reason, I'd probably stop doing it but also file an FCR and reach out to ALPA saying that this is a common unofficial practice on the line. "Everybody does it anyway" is a bad excuse for techniques that are explicitly forbidden, but if you are trying to enforce a breach of procedure the onous is on you to tell me why it's unsafe or where it isn't allowed.
