It’s a wonky procedure for sure. I don’t remember this being a “limitation” when I did my first lap on the 320 back around 2010. Anyone know if this is an Airbus thing or just a Delta tech-cedure?
My simple litmus test is, am I or the pax getting hot? Yes? Turn it on even if I can’t get a 100% verification on the hose.
At our earliest opportunity I will then confirm but sometimes that’s not easily feasible if the jetway is backed up and ops isn’t answering the radio. If it were pushing air properly we probably wouldn’t be having a temp issue anyways, so it’s unlikely we have dueling air sources.
I’m not saying ignore the book but use common sense, make a decision and then move on with your day. Don’t sit there and let 200 people sweat.
I do try to give it 3 minutes on a cold APU to avoid the dirty socks thing, but that’s a different topic.

Of course I’ve never heard of such valve ever being damaged so I truly don’t worry about it.

Bad technique to do a walk around with the APU running if at all avoidable.

Ok, help me out here..... What is up with ATL crews and starting the APU?!?! How do I know it was ATL - the cappie announced it I his welcome aboard PA.
Sitting on a full 757, ~7 min prior to push the air starts... Finally.......The ground crew had disconnected the jet way air at least 15 prior to that. The FAs were begging for air. It was very much not a comfortable environment on the plane.
What gives? Seems it's always a preponderance of ATL folks doing this.

I have seen it a lot, too. There also seems to be a lack of understanding about how even if the OAT is 50 degrees but the sun is shining in the middle of the day, that the cabin will still get uncomfortably hot. There really is no excuse for a cabin to have stagnant airflow, regardless of the OAT.

Give the ground crew my best as I go to the hotel while they unload all the bags and put them on another airplane."
Prediction: No pilot will ever receive a call from the CPO for pressing the GCA "off" button wihout training for a two position switch.
There's hierarchy in business for a reason.
