I’m not saying that’s the case for the OP, and yes it’s about getting on the plane when loads are tight, but also when there’s an open plane with open premium seats, S2 can absolutely net you a better seat.

You can't switch to S2 to get Delta One (assuming you're talking international) because the cutoff to switch is much earlier. And I believe the S2 cutoff domestic aligns with the beginning of boarding

Wrong, you can absolutely get a better seat with a S2, it moves you to the top of the non rev list, and can be first for that D1/FC/C+ seat.

period dot. That’s it. Up to you if you think the first seat released isn’t what you like and you’d prefer to wait. Once you scan your boarding card, no soup.

And to combine responding to multiple posts, I think it’s 45 minutes for international, and I know it’s 30 for domestic.
That being said, yes, if you are the last one on the list to get a seat and the last seat that opens is in FC, then yes, you get that and there’s no reshuffle.

Just a random question/observation when commuting. Why do Delta gate agents most of the time not clear non revs until the very end of boarding even when the flight is open? It makes finding bag space pretty difficult. Not all gate agents do it this way but I'd say 95% or more do. Is this procedure or just their technique?
I’ve seen our agents twiddle their thumbs and wait until the last minute, on wide open flights, long after all revenue passengers have boarded.

It’s one of my pet peeves about the way Delta treats non-revs. AA, for example, tends to clear all non-revs 30-45 minutes prior, waiting until later only if needed for seat availability.

they clear non-revs D-15, that’s their procedure. Anything cleared before that is a favor

Yes, and the OP states the flight was open, which means the top S2 gets the best available seat.
