Our paid sick leave amounts may be different, but I suspect sick call rates are very similar between all 3 airlines. Time off is more valuable than money to a lot of people. At AA, dropping trips is currently next to impossible (except for the senior). Their “sick if needed” on reserve option also skews how many sick hours they actually need to burn vs. a Delta pilot.
And for the majority of pilots who only call in sick when they’re actually sick, their usage isn’t going to change based on allotted sick leave.

I submit that other carriers don’t need GFB because they have roughly ¼ of the sick hours we do.

Looking at the PAS, you can see the pilot group’s monthly sick usage. In 2023, sick averaged 6.6% of total credit hours for the year. If the average pilot credits 85 hours per month, that’s 67 hours of sick usage per year on average. Almost exactly the same as the annual paid sick leave allotted at AA and UA.

Isn't there enough malfeasance on the company's part to clean up across the board before turning on a number of your colleagues?

Define probably. Is it like the company is “probably” ripping us off by hiring inexperienced schedulers and taking millions of dollars from pilots by incorrectly assigning assignments, not properly assigning PB days and not properly coding reroutes? Or is it like we are suppose to get positive space home after a late arriving reroute but the intended meaning was “probably” not based on seat availability? Or is it more like pilots are “probably” excluded from the Minneapolis State family leave program?

That would only be valid IF Delta pilots actually used an average of 200+ hours of sick leave each year, or anywhere near that.

AA and UA would implement GFB in a heartbeat if it actually worked.

we don’t have data on how much GFB calls and their threat changes sick usage. Hard to prove the counter factual

We do have data showing that 2023 was the highest usage sick leave year since “sick leave contest” tracking began under C15. The company’s current blitz of GFBs began in the 2022 timeframe, and continued throughout all of 2023.
