I managed to earn some PBs in Dec. I'm planning to try and use them in Feb. First choice would obviously be to bid for a line and get a high credit 1 day trip and then use that to cash in the PBs. Assuming that doesn't work (not senior enough) is the next best thing to snag a high credit 1 day off the Pilot Swap Board? It seems like people start posting their trips there as soon as the PBS awards are posted.

Any trip with high credit on day 1 will work. You can use 1 PB day to drop a multi day trip. Reserve coverage matters unless you have someone who will pick it up as a Q trip on a WS. This can be repeated multiple times if you take the trip back via swap with friends or the P2P swap board.

Right, but if it weren't, you wouldn't have a backup to the jumpseat flight in question either (mechanical, crew duty, etc).
That said, I always thought that was a CBA thing not an FOM thing. We should have codified it many contracts ago, but "we didn't think they'd do that"...
