Exactly. It's better than nothing in a pinch, and currently, we have nothing (except almonds).

When I was international, I once put on the sheet that I would take anything but Chicken (crazy enough, I'm allergic). I even told the FA that I was allergic and that I'd gladly take any of the other option. Well, I think you can guess what was all that they had left for me... She even got crappy with me when I told her not to bother brining it up because I can't eat it. I had already been packing my lunch for most flights, I just left it on my kitchen counter for this flight.

I'm with M31 here. I wasn't on the WB very long when I grew tired of the same old, sodium laden, crappy meals. I packed my own food for the flight over, then either kept leftovers or went to a grocery store for food on the trip home. I'm glad we got them for more NB flights, but it certainly wasn't even on my list of things I wanted.

I've heard plenty of anecdotes of FAs writing captains up for doing this too. And we all know who the company is going to listen to.
"Writing them up" for...what? And you lost me at the word "anecdotes" which means nothing. I've literally never heard of any pilot, ever, getting written up over crew meals--I can't even think of any circumstance that would even generate such a thing. I'm new to the 330 so the crew meal thing is not an issue anymore. But in my years on the 757 and 320, we would occasionally have crew meals provided within the PWA (out of CONUS turn for example). In those cases, I always went to the lead FA and would just nicely say "we should have a couple of crew meals boarded for the pilots, can you confirm that?" Not once did I ever get any reaction other than "I'll check...yep here they are." Not once did I ever get denied a crew meal on a leg where one was scheduled. Not once did I ever have any sort of negative feedback--that's over ten years of non-transoceanic flying worth of occasional meals.

Methinks perhaps you are trying to find a problem when none exists?

Man, I thought I’d heard the words “written up” for the last time when I got my first grown-up job after college.

Remember three write ups get you a reprimand, three reprimands get you a violation, three violations and you get an admonishment. Two admonishments will cost you eight schrute bucks and 20 schrute bucks will forfeit five Stanley nickels. After that…it’s a zoom meeting with the assistant to the regional manager. So watch yourself.

Is there a way to see if a flight departed payload optimized?

I’m non-reving later this week and have been monitoring the departures over the last couple of days on travelnet. Every day the flight in question shows oversold by ~6-9 seats but then they end up leaving with like 25 seats empty.

You can pull up the flight plan on any flight and there will be a statement on there about payload optimized.....

I tried that and didn’t see that statement. Thought maybe I was missing something. It’s bizarre.

Thanks though
