Not worthy of a new thread, but I thought it was worth a mention:

The inventor of the modern GPWS system passed away last week.

Pretty sure this system saved my sorry ar** in Yuma a couple of decades ago.

Has anyone used the parental leave yet? Any tips to maximizing time off?

Thanks!

I haven't used it personally but know a couple who have. If you can hold 30 hour layovers on your fleet you can jam your entire month's worth of flying into 14 days on PBS then drop the leave on top of it. Gets you the whole month off. You could also bid reserve and put all your days in one block, although you're going to have a few extra reserve days left over since you're always going to have more than 14 LC days. I think the lineholder way would probably get you a little more pay for the month. Of course in either scenario if you jam all that work into the beginning of the month that leaves ~2 weeks at the end of the month to land a GS.

Yes, I have used it. I submitted my request early in March and it took almost 2 mos to be approved. That was right after the new PWA passed and apparently they had several hundred requests all at once and processed them in order of soonest to latest. Things may have evened out, but don't expect it to be approved quickly.

As far as using it, I tied in to a week of VAC, so I got an entire month off with 84 hours of pay. As long as it's not on any of the blackout dates they can't deny it, so go crazy and take time off whenever you want and make some plans more than a month out for once!

yeah it’s pretty awesome. I also got the whole month off by bidding all my trips in the first half of the month. I also had a carryover trip at the end of the previous month that got dropped with pay, so I was able to pick up a GS over part of that footprint.

So did you wait until the bids were awarded and then submit the leave request to drop the trips?

I would be careful doing that. They must approve your parental leave as long as it meets all of the parameters in the PWA, but based on how long it was taking for approval you may not hear until just prior to your leave starts. But I guess if you are comfortable possibly finding out last minute?

Also there may be a requirement for minimum notice in the PWA (don't have it handy right now).

Default Backend deviations

Question for the smarter folks

Trip ended with DH leg this morning. I deviated and came home last night instead.

So...can I pick stuff up today? Do I need 10/12 hours from the originally scheduled end of rotatio or from when it actually ended?

I see WS going out today, trying to figure it out before I call scheds

Thanks

Your legalities are based off your original trip as constructed when you notified them of the deviation. So you are not legal for a WS unless it reports at least 10 hours after the release time of your original trip.
