It was a poor attempt at humor, but you are right. My apologies Moose, and good luck on the interview.

**Freely admit this is a bit of rant**
Called in fatigued recently and it took over an hour and 9 calls to the duty pilot before someone finally picked up the phone. Tried going through dispatch to see if the dispatcher could physically walk over to the duty pilot cubicle and help but was told he was overwhelmed with people calling in fatigued…..
This is unsat. I get it’s a thankless job with high stress but they’re our first point of contact when things go south and the only point of contact approved to call in fatigued with. Also not the first time it’s happened, in January it took over 2 hours to get a hold of one. If the company insists on running redline they need to hire more duty pilots. It’s weird telling my crew the flight will probably cancel but the wheels can’t start turning until someone in Mecca finally decides to pick up.

What happened between 2022 and today? Did caffeine become more effective? Is the pilot group aging in reverse? Does a pay raise mean we're suddenly just fleshy autopilots now that don't need normal rest?
Disturbing, to say the least.
Sometimes wonder if red-eyes (worst offenders of FRMT guidelines) may just be inherently unprofitable from a rest/safety standpoint, at least for Level 50+ aviators. Or would be, if fatigue calls matched reality. I don't believe SWA even screws around with redeyes; very curious to know how other airlines manage this domestically.

Reading the ALPA FRMT email (specifically, "737 Concerns") for May, 2023 was eye opening. The unilateral company retraction of agreed upon (though not LOA approved) OF 2022 fatigue mitigation guidelines did not inspire confidence.

End of trip redeyes are tolerable but mid-rotation redeye are absolutely awful. I've had one, and after that I avoid them like the plague. My day "sleep" rest felt like the hotel room freakout scene from Apocalypse Now.

Thank the lord for fatigue calls. Seems like a perfect time to use them. I had them at a previous carrier and thankfully I only had deadheads after, but no way would I have taken the controls.

Its not just that they're a so called LCC (lol as if). JB would have taken over a decade to expand in the west coast and Caribbean were it not for redeyes. They're incredibly profitable because they generate revenue when planes would just be sitting there and they position planes in complex networks as well.
I agree that mid rotation red eyes are asinine. A red eye after a long rest that ends a trip and gets in before before the sun rises isn't bad at all. We need strong circ adian protections for reservess though. If you do a redeye on reserve you should be done until noon the following day.

SWA is unique for numerous reasons. 1 fleet type, a ton more point to point, no premium product and many other differences.

Just show up. In the "olden days" used to show to the airport and visit the sky club for some preflight hors d'oeuvres and a glass of wine for preflight, but alas today you should be booked in Delta One already.
