As a guy who moved TO base (for more reasons than JUST the commute) during the era of PS commuting, this made me lol. A commute is a time suck and a money hole, no matter how you slice it. Positive space or not, reserve, line holder, GS/WS/YS/IA/whatever. It decreases flexibility and is uncompensated time away from things you'd rather be doing. Its hours sitting in airplanes and/or airports waiting for and riding on your flight, dealing with delays and cancellations. It's money out of your pocket for parking, transportation, hotels or crash pads, food and incidentals. I had one of the easiest commutes there is and was about the most chill commuter out there but in idle moments it's hard not to find your mind wandering to all the time and money you're throwing away just to get to/from work.
About the only thing PS might do is tip someone towards a more junior base/fleet knowing the commute is only half the headache it used to be.

As a long time south Texas commuter, I get it! Just wasn't worth the cost of admission to me. One thing I'm almost sure of though, I spent more and missed out on more money by commuting than I ever saved on taxes. Choices indeed.

Adding PS will provide the hiring team with one more recruiting tool in areas that favor AA and UAL. If you lived in TX would you chose DAL over AA, UAL and SWA knowing you had to commute? PS helps balance the equation. Same for AZ, FL and a host of other highly populated states. PS won't turn PTC into a ghost town, same for MSP, SLC, SEA, etc. PS is about preserving the operation with increased reliability and increased staffing.

Until AA, UAL, and SWA match with their own PS.
Selling this as a recruiting tool isn’t the answer. The increased reliability is the only angle.

Did it this morning, last minute after being called on reserve yesterday. Was a lifesaver and if I didn’t have it, stress would be through the roof.

And humidity, and heat, and hurricanes, and property insurance, and silver alerts, and swamps, and sinkholes, and Spanish... yup choices. I enjoy the visit in February but a week is all I can stand. I commuted twice during my career for about a year each time. Never again if I can avoid it at all. I figured I lost 4 days off a month (half day front and back x 4 trips) and who knows how much money and good deal layovers bidding only 4 day commutable trips. My goal now is to have a beer in my had by the scheduled arrival time on my last leg.

Amen. And how about the thousands of pilots who don’t already live by an airline hub? Without home field advantage, they are more up for grabs. Maybe we’ll never win a big share in say DFW or IAH..but what about OKC, MCI, AUS, STL, MSY, ABQ, and all the villes & burgs in between? I know for me I eliminated lots of good airlines right away because of their bases. That’s why I’m here, and I don’t even live in base. Many, like me, won’t know if they’ll commute or move in base right away, but still want a few domiciles to they like just in case commuting doesn’t work. Some know they will always be commuters and gun for the airline with the easiest commute. After talking with hundreds of prospective airline pilots over the years, yes domicile is the #1 consideration. PS opens up candidates who otherwise probably go to competitors.
