I just heard from a top human (gender non specific) we are blocking middle seats again but buying A380s to stay capacity neutral.
How do these internet rumors get started? Oh yeah, idle bored pilots on the internet... Carry on.
Billy! What are you doing in the basement? In the the dark?!

That one made me chuckle.
Thanks for that 👍

They’re going to understaff, run “a little hot”, and rely on the whoureish ways of this pilot group to make it work. In the C66 newsletter they stated that they will have 9 reserve pilots out of 158 pilots on the A220 in NYC for the Feb bid period. So 94% of that group is going to have a schedule. With 6% reserve coverage. So no reserve coverage, no sick calls, and no winter weather…. And they’re good. Right?
This is a result of a LOA that they signed for sliding/reduced TLVs a year ago. Which apparently they just now are figuring out that they signed this.
Smart and prudent. Lol
Here’s the excerpt:
The Impact of Lower TLVs
The sliding TLV window granted by LOA 20-04 has been eliminated as scheduled as of the January bid period. The TLV is now fixed at 73-78. This means that ALVs will be trending downward, which can have a significant impact on the ratio of regular to reserve lines in a category. As an example, in the February 220A category, there are only 9 pilots on reserve out of 158 next month. This can lead to some undesired bid awards if you bid reserve and don’t include a regular line bid. We recommend you always have a secondary bid group in your monthly bid for these unusual scenarios.

I gather you believe monthly block hours have been relatively static the last few years and improperly staffed categories are a result of poor planning at crew resources.

I’m not Tegrity, but block hours don’t have to have been static for the current situation to be the result of poor planning

Network: "Hey, we want to fly 10 x one day turns out of NYC on Dec 24"
Crew Resources: "Uummmm, we don't have the staffing for that"
Network: "Cool Story...pound sand, it's a done deal!"
Crew Resources: "FML!"
Scheduler at the OCC signing in after the 0700 PCS run: "WTF.....why do I have 10 x 1 day trips and 5 x 2 day trips to cover tomorrow and the RAL shows zero people in the one day and two day availability grouping?!?!"
So riddle me this of wise Sailing, who's exactly is at fault for the "improperly staffed category"? Because I can tell you with 100% certainty it's not the pilots fault!

I believe our time for a great contract is now, not only bc supply and demand is on our side, but I believe JL to be a shockingly poor negotiator.

They have certainly made some bad moves like the big displacement bid and the colossal blunder the early retirement program turned out to be. In the end however Delta has ran a better airline by a big margin than our competitors. The only really negative event was last Easter caused by a very generous covid program with no restrictions. They have managed this working with a very complex contract from staffing and reserve point of view and the most dynamic flight scheduling in possibly the history of the industry.

Hindsight being 20/20 and all....
UAL: didn't retiree too many people...didn't sh!t can two fleets....didn't kick 1800 pilots to unqualified status: Result? When the recovery happened, they went right to hiring 200 a month. I don't remember UAL having a holiday meltdown.
DL: retired too many people from all departments....sh!t canned two entire flees required lots of full courses for new categories.....kicked 1800 pilots to UNAcorn status requiring a mix of SRQ, NRQ, and Full IQ. Result? Training events required far exceed capability and while we stated we need 200 a month new hires, we haven't hit it yet...UAL's been doing it for almost 6 months.

Maybe on the business side since we are actually making a small profit in Q4, but on the pilot side of the house, I'm going to have to disagree.
