After the initial bid award, he can move reserve days around (assuming enough coverage... which can be hard but with patience it can work).

You cannot move days around that will create a FAR conflict.. So if he had to work every Sat/Sun, his schedule will probably look like 4 on, 3 off. He could not, even with reserve coverage, make a stretch of 10 days on once the schedules are released.

You can if there was originally a FAR conflict. So if he had 8 in a row, he could bunch them more of them up together.

From the SRH: "The PCS programming uses the following logic:
  • The move cannot create a 30 in 168 violation, if one didn’t exist, or
  • if a pilot already has seven days on call, then the X-day(s) move cannot create more than 13 days on-

call (This is because one violation already exists and allowing more than 13 contiguous days on-call would create a second violation)."

BWYWWWYB. This applies to bidding reserve too. Knowing how to play the game before you play is advised. Learning via OTJ training results in real learning (or whining) and experience vs. knowledge. I've made my share of mistakes and every one was worth it.

Correct. However, it becomes more challenging if you have to work every Sat/Sun and, especially in NYC, those days are rarely blue after the first PCS run. That's all I'm saying. It's something to shoot for but I don't want to give the OP false hope that it's something you can do at will

As a new guy/gal, do you have the ability to choose between LC and SC? Scenario is potentially living 2-3 hours from base, traffic dependent. It seems to me being LC, way more flexible in planning my drive. I could sit at home. SC, probably going to need a crash pad so I can be ready to go.

all reserve is LC, but you can be assigned up to 6 (I personally haven’t ever hit that many, but others have) periods of short call

If you're NYC based and assigned short call, I assume you're still covering all 3 airports, correct?
When converted, how long is the reserve block or does it vary?

I am curious why you said to check your schedule precisely at 3pm.

That's the contractural time that the company has to put something on your schedule for the following day and not call you to notify you when coming from day off to reserve day. They don't bug you on your "day off" and you agree to look at your schedule after 3pm the last day off.
