reserve days with vacation
I've been going through the sched alerts and SRH, but striking out. Can we have less days of reserve than Min Days On rule for the category if it touches vacation (like we can if with CQ)? It's vacation in the next bid period, not an IVD.

check out John Bell’s reserve line simulator at Johnfbell.com. It has all the rules built in so you can see what is legal.

is anyone smart on 117? The chart is confusing af for dumb people.
scenario: shortcall starts at 5am
assigned a 2 leg, day that starts at 1045am.
End of the day lands 15:50 hrs after the 5am shortcall start. I think it’s legal by 10 minutes (16 hrs after start of RAP). But this will leave me zero wiggle room on the last flight right?
thank you in advance

This is not completely true. Anytime you are coming off a day other than a non-fly day you get the 1800 report protection. If a REG pilot finishes a trip on the last day of the bid period that is not a non-fly day. Also, any day that contains training (primarily this will be CQ), is also not a non-fly day and gets protection.
Scenario: December spill trip lands at 0500 on January 1st.
Does this mean the earliest you could be assigned something, if bidding RES for January, is 1800 on the 2nd?

Assuming you meant 0500 release, you go on call at 0500 on the 1st, earliest assignment is 2300 on the 1st.

This trip spills into the 1st, so my understanding is that reduces my on call days by 1, but does that mean that I would go right back onto LC 18 hours later as you indicate or is the 1st just completely wiped out?

1) FDP report time plus FDP limit from FAR 117 Table B, including mutually agreeable FDP ex- tensions, or
2) RAP start time plus FAR Table B value plus 4 hours, no extension allowed, or
3) RAP start time plus 16 hours, no extension allowed.
For your situation, you enter Table B for 2 leg reporting at 1045 which yields a 14-hour FDP limit.
1) 1045 report time + 14 hour from Table B = 0045 (just after midnight the next day)
2) 0500 + 14 hours (1900) + 4 hour = 2300
3) 0500 + 16 hours 2100
Your limit is 2100 based on #3

I guess that raises a second question. REG in December. Considering RES for January.

When you finish your rotation you are a reserve pilot and must do your post-rotation schedule check, and scheduling can assign you another rotation or SC starting as early as 18 hours from release. Also, transition trip trading is locked during the PBS processing window, so once the RES month schedule is posted, if you drop or swap out of the spill trip, any days in the RES month covered by that trip revert to LC.
