Reserve for Dummies
#1371
Newbie question: I have a single day of reserve at the end of this month I am trying to swap out of. That day shows 20 reserve required, 16 available. The I have offered it 3 different dates to swap with it, they currently show 26/19, 28/23, 23/23. I thought it wouldn't give me any trouble because a couple of those are weekend days with worse coverage than the day I want to move my x-day to, but it denied all 3 requests for "capped reserve day." Am I missing something?
With that message, the only thing I can think of is that you're trying to move a different day. One thing I've screwed up is forgetting that that I need to moving the OFF day, not the reserve day. But as was stated above, an orphaned day at the end of the month is a pretty good deal.

As a reserve-by-choice bidder (rolling thunder), I will add that in all my Short Calls over the years, the vast, vast majority of rotation assignments came well in advance, and not as a “get here asap” call. And even more often, I never got called at all…
Always be in position to report. Don’t be like the 747 pilots a few years back pulling DTW short call from home in California/Florida. But, no need to super-stress over getting to the airport. If they call, the best answer is “as fast as I safely can”. And like gloopy said, 2-hours is not written anywhere, becaus it’s not a rule. But it’s a good guideline.

Looking at the reserves available list, obviously it trends downwards as time goes by and people actually get assignments. Is there a cutoff as to when you can move the off day to pickup a reserve day? I guess by that I mean can I expect for my request to move my X day to a later date to be successfully processed as people starting getting assigned stuff for the earlier date?

I hear it might be because I still show "need OE" on my schedule, as that blocked some others from moving their days, though previously I had success. Ordinarily the orphan day at the end of the month sounds like a great deal, its just that I want to take my wife on a trip, and it looks like the end of this month stands our best chance to make it happen.

The 2200 PCS run 3 full days prior is your last chance to alter a day. So if you are trying to move an X day onto or from a Friday, 2200 Monday is your last shot. You can drop a reserve day via PD, IVD, APD, etc up till 0700 the day prior assuming you don’t already have an assignment by that point.

The OE block is exactly your issue. Your schedule is locked until IOE is complete and the “OK” is placed on your schedule.

What makes this gold?
I'm a habitual reserve bidder and that just means that I have to bid reserve on the first days of the next month to meet the reserve bidding rules. I would also think that if Moose wants the day after the last (ie 1 Nov), he's really only got until 11 Oct at 1800 to fix it in his PBS Bid. Otherwise, it becomes a more complex problem. I'm also assuming that just completing OE, that they won't be able to hold a line.
Is this right or am I missing something?

If the 1st is not an X day (coverage award, for example), only then do reserve bidding rules do apply (3-99-5 or 4-99-4).

You do not have to bid reserve on 1 Nov. He can absolutely bid an X day on 1 Nov, thereby leaving the 31st as a single day of reserve, and is not usable until 1000 at the earliest.

Tends to screw up my GS PB banking strategy and if you do GS and its the last day of the trip, no credit for you. But that's the only down side I see, usually just becomes and extra day off at 6am.
